IT LOOKS LIKE the fat lady is warming up, even warbling out a few tentative notes over at MPC, Micron's former PC division. Sadly, they announced that they are laying everyone off and liquidating the company.
According to the Idaho Statesman, MPC laid off 147 employees on Monday, and will let the remaining 51 go once the company liquidates assets. MPC has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and while it was trying to reorganise, several key people left. Between that, the credit markets, general economic malaise, and the spreading global financial silliness, there didn't seem to be a way to carry on.
With that, things are winding down, ending one of the more interesting companies in PC history. Having just retired my last Micron PC, a Pentium 200 that served as my secondary DNS until late spring, there soon won't be anything left of MPC in my world. Quite a pity really. µ
Well as all of you have seen MPC is officially gone but there is hope and support at mpcdrivers.com there are over 116GB of drivers as of today and more coming as for tech support you guys have me and a few other techs over at mpctechsupport.com so if anyone still reads these comments come on over if you need help we're more than happy to help you.
A new underground group has surfaced to come to the rescue of all mpc owners affected by the closure of the company and it's support site.
Quite a buzz online lately from many sources about the new support site being developed for Mpc owners.
The new site, although just under construction at this point, is currently uploading 2 gigabytes of driver files daily. Once uploaded, the site will feature over 89 gigabytes of driver, manual, tech info, and periphal info files available for free download.
The site, even though under construction has a resemblance to the original site and is offering support while uploading by email at mpcsupport@cox.net.
The site is also receiving many emails from former mpc support people offering to help.
I remember many years ago, around the pentium 2 era, Micron had yellow colored advertisements in compter magazines with witty sentences. They were always the best. Too bad they slowly died off over the years. I predict Gateway will go out next.
Gatway was cool because of the cows.
Bring back the cows, Gateway.
It is sad to see the end of a good company. As a former long time employee - 10+ years - it is a little sad but has been on this path since Joel "COCK" Kocher stole all the money from the company. Several people tried to save it but it is tough with no money...
There is plenty of blame to go around though - several missteps since then did not help... I feel for the people that were left behind - they got royally screwed - basically shown the door with an empty box. That really sucks!
Ah the days of the pentium 133 and edo ram. It was a solid computer and lasted in multiple forms for longer than many of my computers.
Micron made an excellent product. It's sad to see them go. But to be fair, they've been gone for a long time.
AS for the warranties... they're worth about as much a sharper image gift card.
Shouldn't we be more worried about what's going to happen to the customers of MPC with support and warranties? If they're liquidating assets, pre-purchased services are going to be a tossup or plain disappear.
It's sad that you're going to lose MPC from your life, Charlie, but surely the rest of their customers matter more than the individual?
