Telstra could be broken up

Latest rumour from Down Under
Mon Dec 29 2008, 11:42

THE DARK satanic rumour mill down under claims that the largest Australian telephone company, Telstra, could be split up.

Part of the problem is that the government has told the outfit that it is not building a $6.9 billion national broadband network.

If the project is granted to a rival, then Telstra will have to break up its network arm to provide a platform for the national network.

This is because Telstra's rivals have not got a baby's chance on Ayers Rock of getting the network running without some of the outfit's gear.

If Telstra does not want to help, then the government will have to legislate, and that could mean that it would be better for the telco just to hive off the networking side.

Analysts say that Telstra was getting a bit too big for its gumboots and was making very public demands and an ultimatum for regulatory concessions.

Telstra wanted assurances from the government that it would not be forcibly broken up. The government responded to the effect that it could do the network project without the telco. µ

Governments

Its about time people put their foot down and told the Government (whoever is in power) that we are sick of politicians thinking of themselves instead of the role that were elceted to carry out. I have never seen such a mob of winging, incompetent lots of wasters trying their best to feed their own pockets rather that the interests of the country and its peoples.

Overpriced

Stewart says..."unlimited" plan of adsl 2+ 60GB $140AU.
WTF with Internode I get 55gigs a month for 90 bucks on ADSL2. But yeah I have to pay Telstra their precious line rental fee of 30 bucks a month so all in all it's pretty much the same. Bit less on the gigs but my uploads don't count. Go Internode, or better go Naked ADSL and ditch the line rental.

GOOD

Telstra has had such a monopolistic control over the information networks in this country that it is disgusting. They have used this control in a way that any company with a monopoly has: to maximize profits. They do this the usual way a company maximizes profits and of course it is the people, the consumers, who suffer for it.

Look at Telstra's decade long bungle to bring national wide internet services. They had promised to do this but when it became apparent there wasn't big bucks, just a tiny profit, in doing so they dropped the idea like a hot potato. They then focused on a over the top mobile network system that will cost the consumers a great deal more as everyone has to upgrade: Hence... profit.

Then they got pissed that the government dared to put forth a contract to any other company to do what they had failed to do.

They deserve being broken up. Maybe then some real competition might ensure we are not getting the shaft when it comes to paying for our net.

As long as Telstra owns the network itself no true competition can form. Every ISP has to play by telstra's rules or just not do business in this nation. It is disgusting that, and has ensured we have ridiculous things that other nations do not have, such as 'shaping' after a certain amount of use.

NZ did it first

Odd that Telstra import management from another big monopoly that had to be broken up despite being regulated.
Even odder that pollies think Telstra would not maximise its profit, despite cost to country.
The companies acts make it mandatory for management to maximise their profits.
What could be the problem here ?
The locals wanted telstra broken into an infrastructure and a reselling company before it was sold.
Experts said it coiuld not be done.
Odd, the kiwis did it.

PMG Profits "Redistributed"

PostMasterGeneral had a job, and a role by law; turned into Telecom Aust. in the Fraser Years, still a service to the public at that time, tho. Then Saint Bob sold the Banks, Saint Paul sold the Airports and Seaports, and Saint Johnny finally got the chance to sell off one of his governments best-remaining profitable ventures (to his rich mates). Suddenly he needs a GST to replace the funding they used to EARN!
Here's a joke for ya: What do you call a government that doesn't ? A ment?

telstra is too big for its boots

Telstra have a few problems
1.it thinks because it owns the network it can have this persona that its service is better- reality is its not.

2. because of 1 they feel that the public has more respect and assurance that their product is better then competition and a result of this is
for their "unlimited" plan of adsl 2+
60GB $140AU and get this uploads are counted against your 60gb, so you get shafted.
But the problem is all the mid/high income earners that just want the internets to work and dont have a clue, ring telstra because they have been around since they were grasshoppers, and they say in stuck up snob voices and with stewie griffin accents, ohh I do say I would like some of that internets please, they hand over CC details, and also buy the basic 4 port router that costs telstra 40 buks, they charge $200. so people are saying that's ok, charge ridiculous amounts, and stupid plans. So as long as we keep this sort of behavior going, its never going to change. they will get bigger and eventually untouchable.

SO I would love the auzzie gov to say screw u here is 10 million buks Serg go buy that ivory back scratcher and we will give the internet back to the people.
just thinking about that puts a smile on my face, ohh dreams tell me they can come true. please
Pray for us England, Pray for us, and pray that our internet is only censored for kiddy porn and the like, and not our free speech, and bittorents PRAY FOR US

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
