A US PROBATION department boss who took home the departmental laptop has been charged with nicking it.
When Erie County's coppers popped around to ask George Alexander, 56, a few questions about the missing laptop they found it packed with porn.
Alexander has been charged with grand larceny and and criminal possession of stolen property, the attorney general's office said. He has since resigned.
Apparently the state inspector general's office found Alexander had taken home a $1,700 laptop purchased for the Probation Department with state Division of Criminal Justice Services cash.
The laptop, which was supposed to be used in a programme to reduce youth violence, was traced to Alexander's house. He claimed he didn't know he had the computer, which had been used to trawl several networking and adult-related sites. Alexander honourably blamed his son for the porn.
The computer was tracked down using anti-theft tracing software. µ

How easy to blame on your son. Would the answer change if it was a daughter? If so, then the next answer would be my dog was up late night and was bored doing his/her night shift
It's a shame that there isn't a plug about the software used.
If he probation office didn't want the laptop to go missing, why didn't they just order up a full sized computer?
I mean, that is why people are supposed to have laptops, to take with them.
It also sounds like they need someone better in the government IT department.
Giv' um 5 years more in da can for being a moron; help us all keep him out of reproductive cycle longer by attributing that to natural selection. Stealing a laptop and then keeping the anti-theft software on it, that is evolutionary equivalent to being a dodo bird.
Boy, will he be popular in the joint with his old pal's he sent back for parole violations :)
At least we know the tracking software works.
