ICANN plan slammed

Suffix too far, says US Commerce Department
Tuesday, 23 December 2008, 09:34

THE INTERWEB Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) cunning plan to create hundreds of new Internet domain names has been attacked as a waste of time and space.

The US Commerce Department thinks that alternatives to ".com" will not help punters, promote competition or do anything much really.

ICANN will accept bids for new Internet suffixes early next year as it opens the bonnet of the world wide wibble's ancient old addressing system and tinkers a bit.

But top Commerce Department official, Meredith Baker, said she was not convinced that any consumer benefits outweigh the costs.

In fact she warns that it could jeopardise the stability and security of the Internet addressing system.

Outfits who allocate the new names might have a wee bit too much power in the market and could raise domain name prices, she muttered.

Generally what a government thinks about the Internet does not hold any sway, but since the US invented the net and has more bombs it has considerably more power over ICANN policy than the EU, Russia, or any other nation. µ

These are the same geniuses that refused to allow a .xxx domain lest the internet be overrun with porn, aren't they?

Tsar Bomba

The Soviet Union did design a 100 megaton fusion bomb, called the Tsar Bomba, and actually tested it at half-power (50MT) on October 30, 1961, but it was considered by both the USSR and the USA as impractical for actual use; too large for any missile, and any plane carrying it would get shot down long before reaching its target. Plus the detonation effects would be mostly wasted, better to use multiple smaller devices more accurately targeted.

Better to eliminate the porn than condone it. But then why would John need Internet access?

Mmmm, can I have "myname" as the suffix?

Could a company have it's name, could there be www.anyting.microsoft?

Can I register the suffixes:
.microsoft
.apple
.uk
.us
.usa
.news
.film
.movies
.google
.haha

You forgot, We have the tech.

Most of the communications lines run through the usa. Even though the main lines for consumers are inadequate for true high speed connections (+20mbps asymmetrical)

Give the fact that the ARPANET was a USA project too, I would like to claim we really did start the beginning of internet.

We do need to play nice with the other internet main hubs though. I KNOW the internet will not work without multi-country cooperation.
