LG DISPLAY will show off a dual-mode LCD screen at CES that it claims works just as well outdoors in sunlight as it does indoors.
The 14.1-inch display is aimed at notebook computers. With a bit of hardware support, like a switch, it can enable users to change display modes to suit the ambient lighting conditions.
Backlit notebook screens are bright enough to view indoors but are washed out by sunlight outdoors. A reflective layer behind the notebook screen produces a useable image outdoors but is too dark to use indoors. LG's new display screen can be switched between backlit and reflective modes to be useful in both environments at the flip of a switch, the company says.
When the display is in reflective mode, the backlight is turned off, extending battery charge.
LG claims that the display has a contrast ratio in outdoors mode of 9:1 versus about 3:1 for most notebook screens. The company says the display is still a prototype. µ

This would be interesting on mobile phones, especially PDAs.
Knowing how often I need to squint and cover my PDA screen while trying to send a message, it would be very useful indeed.
Laptop, rarely used under the sun anyway.
The HTC Touch HD has an auto-backlight feature, and I've not had a problem with it outside in daylight. However, it's not exactly scorching sunlight here in the UK.
