Numonyx makes more NAND

Memory glut? What memory glut?
Thursday, 18 December 2008, 15:36

LOVE CHILD OF INTEL and STMicroelectronics, Numonyx, has just announced a new line of NAND flash memory devices for the consumer electronics market.

Its new products include 32GB multi-level cell NAND, 32GB eMMC and 8GB microSDs for everything from mobile phones and USB drives to digital cameras and music players.

All of its new devices were manufactured using Numonyx's brand spanking new 41nm manufacturing process and the firm reckons the new NAND will deliver significantly more storage for multimedia.

Apparently Numonyx's embedded MMC will come in flavours ranging from 2GB to 32GB, and the microSD - currently the smallest memory card available - will come in varieties ranging from 2GB to 8GB.

The firm boasts its 32 GB eMMC can store up to 16,000 high resolution digital photos, 8,000 songs and 20 hours of high definition videos.

But even that might not be enough in the current climate. NAND flash has been having a tough time of things this year, hit with an oversupply glut and a major slump blamed conveniently on the economic crisis.

Yet it's not just NAND that's taking the hit. Flash memory is being blamed, maybe unfairly, by the entire semiconductor industry for causing a major slump.

Whatever happens over the coming year, Numonyx seems determined to keep making memories. µ

b's and B's

Watch your b's and B's, please.

Your "32GB multi-level cell" is actually "32 Gb (gigabits) multi-level cell," and that's straight out of the press release. If you're talking about a chip, go with b (bits) if you have to guess.

8GB MicroSD are already only £13.

8GB MicroSD are cheap, what are they going to do to make their product different or better? The size is only the same, so where is the differentiator?

Will it be 2x or 5x faster? More reliable? Use less power?
