WE MAY ALL BE in for a real treat next year as Sky takes the next step forward in bringing us next-generation entertainment with a Sky HD 3D service.
It is no secret that next year will bring us more 3D films, yet bringing out a 3D TV service is certainly a milestone for the company.
The service will basically piggyback on the existing Sky HD service using the same HD box and satellite dish.
Although a new and interesting viewing experience, it won’t be that cheap, as 3D screens alone will set you back around £2,000, although if this service takes off the price is likely to come down.
Unfortunately, to begin with the viewer will be expected to don those flattering 3D specs, which we all know and love, yet Sky hopes that in the future the service will take a visit to the opticians for laser treatment meaning spec-free viewing.
The remaining work needed to bring 3D TV is down to the production of the programme. The production crew will need to use co-sited two-camera rigs to film the action and then paste these two pictures together throughout the development of the programme.
At present the system Sky has developed is only a prototype, and will probably not be the one we will see in the future, yet the principals behind it are bringing 3D TV off the screen and into reality. µ

Curses! Amblyoptics like myself get no benefit from so-called 3D technology. Although, technically, we don't really have binocular vision in the first place and rely on other "cues" for 3D in the real-world.
I'm sorry, but my vision is far to important to me to undergo an unnecessairy laser treatment just so that I can view 3D TV (and video games I'm sure). They should make contact lenses instead, much safer for us!!! lol. Also, if this took off I think you'd see more stylish glasses being developed for it.
Nice one SKY.
When are we going to have the proper 3D cube TVs? We've seen the prototypes, what's taking these things so long? They look fantastic!
Can you imagine them for sports, action films, horse racing, football, motor racing, police camer action, Jerry Springer!
Being able to see the guy and his horse on stage on Springer. Or the guests fighting and throwing stuff at each other. Or the cars up close, or zooming out to see the whole race the whole time.
And of course 3D video games.
I want a 3D cube TV that I can turn around, zoom in and out and choose what I'm looking at. Combine it with "live" Google Maps/Earth and you've got a seriously amazing gadget tool.
Now that's a gadget I would pay serious money for.
Add the two together, and the way flat panel displays are produced only needs a slight adjustment and our brains are successfully fooled into thinking that we are looking at real 3D space behind the TV frame.
