OSX upgrade crashes Macs

Legendary stability destabilised
Wednesday, 17 December 2008, 10:39

APPLE which bases mucho of its marketing on the fact that its rivals crash a lot, has just released an update for its Mac OS X that... er, crashes a lot.

The 10.5.6 update for Mac OS X, Leopard  was declared perfect and holy in the sight of Steve Jobs and was eagerly downloaded by fanboys everywhere.

Now it seems that the fanboys might be suffering from a wee bit of religious doubt after the upgrade tiggered their expensive gear.

Some users, particularly those who downloaded the full upgrade, are not suffering as much.

But over at the MacInTouch board, readers have been finding their Macs hanging or suffering from post-update reboot blues. The Airport and wired network connections keeps dropping and there are audio bleeps when users try to restart.

The Mail application refuses to quit, fails to connect or crashes while attempting to connect to the mail server. And it really hates messages with attachments according to reports.

The upgrade is self-censoring too. Instead of warning the user that there is a problem, the system goes mysteriously silent as if there was no problem at all. Much like the Apple press office when it comes to bad news.

One user reported that the upgrade made his Imac into a brick, complete with a white screen which just bleeps at him, which is probably a wrongly-reported RAM fault.

Apple fanboys say that you sometimes get a few problems with an OS upgrade. It is all part of the charm of owning one of the machines.

However it is not something we notice the outfit ever mentions in its 'I am a Mac' campaigns. µ

What kind of news is this?

I just upgraded to 10.5.6 yesterday and everything was just fine :O. But what makes me write this is: why do we insist on this fan boys and add campaign issues? It's sad to keep reading this "bitter woman" comments about the rivalry between macs, pc and all the crap out there! Please write good pieces of news and save the bitter comments for the coffee shop table. We want to be informed not fille with hatred. Thanks!

Ummm. Fanboy?

You know. This is just what you get from sites like this. Unknowing and ignorant people.

Why do you have to be this way. It is just hatefull. Of course apple isn't exempt from having any issues at all. They are not the almighty. They do make mistakes too.

The thing is though the mistakes are so few and far between that when they do have an issue site like this one and ignorant people like you have to take advantage of it and trounce on them.

I'll take this little issue that apple will fix over all the multitude of issues that that other company that makes a operating system has to deal with on a daily basis.

I'll deal with this issue instead of all the resourse sucking protection that needs to be running on said system above.

I will deal with this one issue for the pure enjoyment and stability that is offered to me on OS X.

Call me a fan boy if you must. But think of me next time you have to bring yourself to boot up to that horrendous software that you call an operating system.

Oh and by the way. I just upgraded 17 machines between home and the office and not one of them had an issues. Thanks to sites like yours this issue is being blowen out of proportion. I feel.

The boss at the "big blog" where I appear still references the Inquirer once in a while; but, this is exactly why I won't. Sleazy journalism.

I just upgraded 3 macs in our array - ranging from a G4 iBook to a recent 24" iMac. Smooth as silk.

When I read of "problems" - clicked through and discovered virtually all the problems were download problems. 'Nuff said.

Cripes! I only ended up here from clicking through Google News to see if there was anything worth blogging about.

There isn't.

Fanboyism

When Windows crashes, oh, Windows is crap, that justifies daddy's big chunk of money that went on my Mac... When Mac crashes, oh, so what, everyone makes mistakes!

Attention

In this comments area, you might spot apologetic mac fanatics who are known to flock to any article that exposes a mac's vulnerabilities. They try unsuccessfully to cover up the ugly parts.

f'in fanboi's

I have upgraded too and only noticed performanced boosts. I have used macs for years and have noticed that updates only seem to affect idiots who they are so smart with thier so called 1337 skillz that they alter system files or install shady 3rd party software which alters system files which does cause malfunctions when updating.

Overall this update improved battery life, increase performance, and improved graphic performance, such as games.

Address Book and Mail have improved in stability and crash less!

Also, I don't think that "The Inquirer" is a trustworthy source for technology news.

Charm?

"Apple fanboys say that you sometimes get a few problems with an OS upgrade. It is all part of the charm of owning one of the machines. "

Well in that case, windows has been charming the pants off of users for decades!

As Usual

Apple elitist can't take a grain of criticism. Criticize something about their computer and they take it as a personal attack. GROW UP. It's a freakin computer. You act like 2 year olds.

Crashes...

A lot of talk goes on about which system is more robust, secure, etc... between PCs and Macs. But very rarely the hardware support is part of the topic.

Most of windows issues are because of a cult to old software and extensive hardware support on the OS. These add bulk and insetability to the system.

Apple on the otherhand just dont mind much about that. They have a very short list of hardware to write drivers for, and they screw program support without worry or even bother to inform about it (anyone tried Diablo 2 on 10.5? they removed 256 color support).

Even though im currently a Mac user, I still think they have a lame quality check and software testing, they dont really care about users. All they worry about is that the shiny boxes look good and are easy to sell with a hefty premium.

Macs do crash from time to time, some updates have issues, hardware fails before time or dont meet the expectations, etc... From microsoft I can tolerate that. BUT I do find it inexcusable from a company that has complete control over the OS, the drivers, and the hardware it will run on.

You might preffer to use their software and the beauty of their design (hell i do), but if you say that they are flawless or great, then you are just deceiving yourself.

Not one crash through testing

Installed most of the betas during the testing, over a clone of my usual System, symlinked to my Users. Mac stuffed full of applications, utilities and tweaks. Loads of things hanging off the ports, many chained together.

Not one problem so must assume the problems reported elsewhere are limited to individuals' Macs.

Just the good news

@Ricardo, seriously, all sites should just report good Apple news? It's not like the INQ doesn't report on MS's failings.Besides, letting users know that an upgrade might brick their computer is info worth putting out there, especially if Apple won't.

RE: f'in fanboi's @ Fanboy

LOL.... funny how people can be so blind - " my machine is running fine so whoever is reporting the problem must be exaggerating".. have the brian to think please: 1, if EVERY machine failed after the update, it is not called unstable, it is called armageddon; 2 these who do not ruffer from the problem can obviously post here, there are those at large that are affect, they can not go on line and post, so dont for a secon think that just because no one here reports the problem, that the problem does not exist.

all in all XP is about as good as OSX, it doesnt look as good, but that is easily forgiven or corrected with mac theme.

STOP IT.

Frankly I am sick and tired of all this anti Mac/Windows business. It is so unbelievably puerile and futile. I am a Mac user (at home) but I use PCs exclusively at work. I actually like Vista. If you're happy with using Windows or Linux or whatever, that's great. Its your machine, YOUR choice - nobody else's. Just keep your mouth shut about what others use, that's THEIR choice and NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, and that includes you INQ. GROW UP, GET A LIFE. I've never had a problem in 15 years of Mac use, I've been on the internet for 10 years, I've never had a virus or any kind of the problems my plethora of Windows using friends seem to have (and ask me to repair). A Mac suits me. MY CHOICE NOT YOURS. I respect your choice whatever it is.

Points to ponder

1) It's the holier-than-thou attitude of St.eve of Jobs and his pack of evangelicising employees, plus the vanishingly small, but highly vocal clan of frothing, fanatical fanboi "customers" that irritate most of us calm, rational beings.

2) I've stated this before, but it bears repeating. I've been a successful control systems/industrial automation engineer for over 30 years. I've seen most everything that's come along. What I haven't seen is an Apple. Period. In my opinion, until an Apple can successfully be used in the kinds of systems I design and implement, then it's not a real computer, and is only suitable for those who feel that image is more important than function.

That's not to say that Windows is good at hard real-time (HRT). It's not. But there are solutions that let you run Windows on top of a HRT kernel, so you can have both your HRT code and your easy to use operator interface and data crunching apps on the same box, if need be.

Besides, ALL major vendors of HRT development platforms run on Windows. Oh, sure, you can waste time rolling your own development platform on Linux or OSX. I don't have the time to do that, I'm too busy doing billable work for real clients with real needs.

POINTS TO PONDER - NAFF

So Rich Wargo says "I don't have the time to do that, I'm too busy doing billable work for real clients with real needs." Yeah so am I in graphic, web and media design. And again "...in the kinds of systems I design and implement, then it's not a real computer" Yeah, well I can say that too. If a computer can't run Photoshop filters on a 130Mb CMYK TIFF file then, to be honest, it just isn't a real computer is it? What is a real computer? My computer (a device that 'computes') happens to be a Mac and is very real thanks. Please don't be so crass. We use our very real computers (Mac, Windows, Linux, BeOS) that do want WE want. Every computer type has its 'fanbois' even ATARI. GET OVER IT. Your computer system Rich may be completely useless in my line of work. Use whatever does 'it' for you. So you don't like Steve Jobs, well, that's an American thing isn't it. Part of the Apple/Jobs 'cult' has been built up by the media and sites like the INQ. And then there are the fanbois. You'll find the evangelising kind everywhere that worship Apple, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Man U, Elvis, Eric Clapton. Red Sox, Ferrari or whatever, together with their saints/god(s). Part of Human nature my friend, you're just not looking hard enough and perhaps you're being a little prejudiced and require a little rationale.

More Points to Ponder

Perhaps it's because I don't "worship" any being other than the Catholic Holy Trinity that I don't buy into any of this evangelisation crap. To me, a computer is just a tool. It does what I want, or I get rid of it and get something that does. It doesn't matter what it looks like, or whether other people think it's "cool" or whatever. I am a professional engineer and to me, function is what matters. Elegance too, but only as it relates to function.
