A-Data goes for the gamer

Keeps it cheap
Tuesday, 16 December 2008, 12:55

FOLLOWING IN THE footsteps of other enthusiast brands, A-Data has come up with some new kit to kindle the gamer flame on the X59 platform.

Despite the Energizer-like packaging, the XPG series - as it is named - has a bit of everything. You've got DDR3 tri-channel kit at DDR2 prices, as well as some extremely high-end dual-channel kit for X48 and the likes. These include the very high-end DDR3-2133X (v2.0) actively cooled dual- and tri-channel kit.

We have absolutely no idea what will happen to your Core i7 if you plug this 2.05V kit but, if it does manage to survive the ordeal, we're pretty sure there are good things to be had...

There are also XPG-series DDR2 PC2-8500 @ 6-6-6-18 and PC2-6400 5-5-5-12 kits, but these are reserved for those on a real strict budget.

This announcement would have gone unnoticed here at The Inq, if not for A-Data's traditional low pricing on memory kit (the cheap b****** that we are).

Despite A-Data not handing over the price we looked up Newegg.com: Right now, you can pick up standard A-Data Vitesta 3x2GB DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.65v-1.85v memory for $154.99... this is $25.83/GB, which is *very* cheap for DDR3. The XPG should carry a slight premium, tho'.

In the end they're all labeled 'gamer' but it looks like they'll get everyone on board, from the budget gamer to the deep-pockets enthusiasts looking for a thrill. µ

i7 DDR3 Voltage Disaster

You can't use 1.65v or higher memory for any i7 systems without running the risk of frying the CPU so it doesn't surprise me that such memory would be that cheap. On the bright side you could gobble it up now in hopes that it won't burn out AM3 chips when they debut with DDR2 and DDR3 support...maybe.
