German ISPs to impose anti child porn software

Cut it off. No net for kiddie fiddlers
Tuesday, 16 December 2008, 12:29

THE INTERIOR MINISTER for Germany's Lower Saxony region has suggested ISPs force their customers to use anti-child pornography software or be denied access to the Internet.

Uwe Schünemann, a member of Germany's CDU party, is gunning for users to contractually commit to special filtering software which purportedly blocks any attempts to access material containing child sex abuse.

In creepy, big brother fashion, a person's ISP would be able to detect whether or not they were using the software, and if not, could automatically cut off their access. A form of tech-castration, if you will.

Schünemann also wants changes to be made in Germany's Telemedia Act in order to impose his plan nationwide, claiming it's a much more efficient way of dealing with child pornographers on the net than painstakingly tracking and blocking on the IP or DNS level, which takes significant time and resources.

The minister, however, failed to say how exactly he planned to deal with embedded devices or how he would implement the software's use on all "internet capable" devices.

Since 2003, Lower Saxony has seen a total of 462 offenses in connection with the manufacture, distribution or possession of child pornography, and although Schünemann admits the new system will not be able to guarantee absolute protection, it is hoped the system may do some good. µ

The Default OS

They won't have a version of this blocking program for every version of every model of every computer/device with every version of every possible OS.

So if they ever manage to twist the laws so much to enfore an installed software, they will only do so to users of Windows Vista and maybe XP. And only 32-bit.

Like, if a government virus can run on an alien ship, they won't have trouble deploying their software to any internet-capable machine.

The typical computer-ignorance of the law makers.

double think

Great stuff, no doubt this software would only work with win32, so all linux and BSD users will be suspect paedophiles. Double-plus good...

Sound bytes

Another politician after some sound bytes to try and appeal to the ignorant masses. A bit like Senator Stephen Conroy in Oz.

grrr

I don't want the government in my home, let alone in my computer. I'm tired of these devils forcing their will for the sake of the children.
