Wii outsells Xbox three to one

NINTENDO'S WII outsold the Xbox 360 by nearly three to one last month.

While Microsoft managed to shift a fair few of the boxes it was just not enough to stop punters taking the Wii.

According to research outfit NPD, Nintendo shipped 2.04 million Wii's in comparison to the Xbox's 836,000.  Sony's PS3 shipped 378,000 units, better than a poke in the eye with a short stick, but jolly disappointing.

A breathless Vole told us last week that sales of the Xbox had increased by 25 per cent in comparison to last year and it was pretty sure it had beaten the Paystation 3 by three to one.

Its sales, it said were spurred by the recent release of hot-selling games like Gears Of War 2, Fable II, and Lips.

The small matter of the fact it slashed its console by nearly a third and enabled it to start streaming HD movies might have helped a bit too.

However that does not explain why Nintendo could flog so many of its Wii's during the same period.  Maybe some people are buying both. µ

Lord and Protector

Our Wii gets about 2 hours use a week..maybe.. Our 360 gets about 16 to 20 hours a week. My 7 year old daughters can see the graphical difference and prefer the Xbox over the Wii. I have to tell them they need to play the Wii or daddy's getting rid of it. Then they change their minds and play it for about 20 min or so. Wii remotes are awesome, but the graphics are just horrid in comparison to PS3 or Xbox. it doesn't take a hard core gamer to see it either...Just ask my 7 year old daughters. I have a hard time figuring out why everyone is so hellbent on the Wii really..

How can an Xbox or PS3 lose money?

The hardware inside is old hat and common. How can it be expensive to make?

A new pc can be bought for £200, half the price of the much lower spec'd PS3.

A PS3 has sweet FA inside it, so how can it be expensive to make?

It's just like Sony memory sticks, 2x the price and half as good. Sony's name now stands for overpriced, slow and restricted.

I have a DVD I was going to lend to a friend, but since I didn't know if I would get it back I tried to record it onto my VHS just in case. When I played the VHS back it flickered dark, light, dark, light and all because of that shitty DRM old tech in VHS/DVD recorders. Screw Sony and all those other swines for making it hard for regular folks to look after stuff we have paid for.

Since then I am happy to buy DVDs from the polite Chinese people in car parks.

That's because ps3 is nearly dead according to cnnmoney.

They should have taken it easy with the blue-ray drm bull. come on, it dosen't do sh** to protect content except make it all slow like poo. and the bad people are still able to do their thing.

All this delay and the power, in the end it still loses.

Well last gen the ps2 did win even being not that powerful.

I just hope nintendo use the money they make on this and produce Wii2 with the latest AMD/ATI graphics technology chip. All with HD and ability to upscale all the stuff they have released for the current Wii including all the virtual console titles...

They should be able to develop a very good emulator and with lots of options/filters etc. Just imagine all those old bangers games being upsampled and exploded onto my 200inch HD projector!

Laters, Jon.

What about the PS3

Why the Wii / Xbox compare? Why not a Wii / PS3 compare? Are you guys afraid to pick on Sony and the PS3 boat anchor

The headline should read "Wii outsells PS3 six to one".

Wii making money

The Wii makes a profit on each console sold in contrast with MS and Sony that loose money on each console sold. As long as Nintendo keep selling only consoles they'are making money. MS and Sony depend on software to make money and to able to sell software you need to first sell the consoles so I think at the end Nintendo will just beat them to the ground on this generation.

--------

I don't understand why people get so worked up about the number of units sold. The 360 has been out for awhile (in console years) where the PS3 and WII are relatively new. What would be more interesting is the install base and how many hours are the different consoles played. What has Microsoft generated in revenue with the downloadable content and partnerships with other vendors (NetFlix). Selling consoles doesn't make you money, you make it on the back end via games. But, since the WII and PS3 are struggling in this area i'm sure the profits haven't done as well as the 360. So in the end since the wii isn't selling games they are just putting themselves in debt.

Wii don't like dust collection

The Wii may be outselling the Xbox 3-1 but our Xbox 360 gets used 98%+ more than our Wii.Our 360 is used on average of 4 hours a day every day.Our Wii is lucky to get 4 hours a month on a good month.I have no problems with the Wii,It simplpy doesn't have enough content to turn it on more than that.
Wich makes it an expensive dust collecter. When the Wii gets a solid library of games wee will use it.Until then the 360 rules.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
