Welsh taxpayers money used to buy TVs and iPods

But apparently it's legit

TAX PAYMENTS have always been a cause for friction, yet we're willing to bet that the taxpayers would blow their gaskets if they knew that their money was being spent on Ipods for Assembly members.

Well, be prepared to become infuriated if you live in Wales as it was revealed today that two Conservative members of the Welsh Assembly bought Ipods out of their taxpayer funded allowances.

Cheeky monkeys Nick Bourne and Alun Cairns put forward the £398 total for the Ipods and claimed the purchases as office costs.

Mr Bourne is the opposition leader so he should really know better, yet Mr. Cairns took it one step further with cleanliness in mind as he bought a £250 Dyson vacuum cleaner for his office, also using taxpayer money.

These two are not the only perpetrators however, since information released today showing the AMs' claims for their offices, living allowances and travel expenses highlights this problem in several offices.

Nick Ramsay, Tory AM thought it would be rather nice to have a TV complete with stand and insurance worth £814.98 while a previous report shows that TVs are indeed his weakness as he spent £977.95 on a Sony LCD TV complete with surround-sound and all the trimmings.

Others were a little more modest with their tax spending. Local government minister Brian Gibbons spent £16.50 on a Royal British Legion wreath, which is really nothing compared to the greed of the others.

A Conservative spokesman said, "All of these claims are legitimate and within the rules. We await the outcome of Sir Roger Jones's review and will consider his recommendations in detail."

Although this seems absolutely ridiculous, AMs are actually allowed to claim up to £15,000 to maintain an electorate office, yet we hardly think TVs and Ipods fall within this remit.

Legitimate these expenses may be, yet we think it likely that taxpayers will get hot under the collar when they find out that their hard-earned taxes are being spent on gadgets and electrical goods that serve little purpose in an assembly office. µ

If . . .

private industry behaved like this we'd be having huge bailouts of banks and collapsing industries round the world. . .

If...

.. private industry managed their finances like this, the government would be looking to lock them up.

LCD TV's, surround systems, iPods.. all being bought for public use then disappearing immediately while never having to account for their use or that they ever even existed is bound to be abused.
It's about time the items and buildings that are purchased using taxpayers money to support MPs remained the property of the state when the MP leaves office.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
