Penniless IT workers will turn to crime
SEVERAL REPORTS have predicted that the current economic downturn will turn techies to crime, using their computer skills for nefarious purposes.
Companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Finjan have both predicted that some employees will turn to crime next year in order to make a few bob, and some are being investigated already.
The kind of crimes we're talking about here are credit card fraud, selling off financial or intellectual information and basically abusing their talents for profit.
Neil Ysart of PwC said that, "People from the financial sector are all saying the same thing: there is a rise in internal investigations as everyone has seen a rise in suspected fraudulent activity.”
Ysart cites examples of well documented cases of fraud back in the recession of the 1990s and predicts it is likely that this kind of behaviour will rise again as the ongoing economic pinch tightens.
Forensic experts at PwC have advised employers to keep an eye on people who are likely to be tempted, such as those who handle expenses, have access to sensitive customer information or might be in a position to falsify performance numbers to win bonuses.
Finjan's report says, "Having the large number of layoffs of IT professionals all around the world, especially in the USA, we expect a rising number of people willing to 'give it a try' and to get stolen credit card numbers, online banking accounts and corporate data that they can use to generate income." µ
