SONY GOT INTO a bit of trouble yesterday for violating the rules around protecting childrens' privacy and was sued by the US government, unfortunately for the music company that is changing its name from Sony BMG to Sony Music Entertainment, because it won't get out of this one.
Sony will get a $1 million slap on the wrist for accepting registrations on its music websites from children younger than 13, failing also to ask for parental permission.
The lawsuit, which was filed in US District Court in Manhattan, said that the music company violated the terms of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule enforced by the FTC and that it does not clearly outline how it collected or used the information gathered on its websites.
A Sony representative who was too shy to reveal his identity said that the company was going to do more to make sure that no youngsters would be able to register on its websites without parental permission, and that the company was willing to pay the anticipated $1 million fine.
The unknown yet in-the-know Sony representative did say that the case is expected to be closed and word of the outcome will be released by the US government as early as the end of this week. µ

While, I know it is popular sport these days, does the 'person' above (I had other descriptors, but wanted to keep it friendly), really think Bush was involved in this?
And seriously a 1Mil dollar fine... Sony should be lucky this wasn't the EU!
