Nvidia's GTX 295, pix, specs tip up online

CES launch plans outed
Thu Dec 11 2008, 16:34

SOME PEOPLE JUST can't keep a secret it seems, with sites leaking details and specs about Nvidia's upcoming GTX295 VGA card all over the shop.

The graphics firm's latest offering will boast two 55nm GT200 GPUs linked via internal SLI, count 480 (240×2) stream processors, have a memory bus width of 896 bits (448 bits x 2) and a memory size of 1792MB DDR3 (896MBx2).

It also won't be adopting GDDR5, and will be guzzling as much as 289W which, if true, is a preposterously large amount. But then the Green Goblin has never really been eco-green.

A photo on VR-Zone shows what it claims is a picture of the GTX295 with two DVI ports, one Display Port and 8+6 pins for the power connectors. Chinese site Expreview has one too, just the other way up.

Nvidia is holding back in order to launch the new card on the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas, starting January 8th.

To date there haven't been any leaks about pricing, but the general consensus appears to be that the Green Team will be doing its utmost to remain competitive against AMD's 4870X2 card.

Competitive price wise or not, if the specs hold true, the GTX295 will pack quite the performance punch, possibly just enough of one to knock AMD off its currently superior perch. Just a question of how long that lead might last. µ

@unlucky charlie

Indeed. It seems strange to call out this card for the power usage, when the self-same 4780 mentioned in the article sucks-up some 420W under load.

Not that we would ever want to accuse TheInq of bias, of course.

@foole @Me

All Nvidia products are vulnerable

Not some, not just laptops ALL OF THEM.

Read the articles...

@me
"Replace it in a year"

--If it lasts that long.

So I ask the question again:

"More money than sense or just plain stupid?"

Seems like the latter to me...

@99flake

99flake, the kind of people that will buy a card as ridiculous as this are *exactly* the kind of people that will then replace it within a year.

@DarkKnight

I think you are kidding yourself in saying that when a top notch card fails it will be obsolete anyway.

Many cards are failing very early on, in many cases well inside the first year and certainly inside two years.

I cannot for the life of me understand the logic in buying a top price product such as this knowing it has such an achilles heal.

Its like popping down to Rolls Royce and buying the top of the range car and the salesman saying "well yes sir there is a problem with these in that the car will explode and the wheels fall off inside two years" and you replying "thats ok, it'll give me an excuse to buy another one at £150,000 ,chuckle chuckle"

More money than sense or just plain stupid?

In any case save your money buy a 4870x2 that will still work in 2 years time, give you DX10.1 and you will be able to sell it on ebay to fund your next purchase.

GTX 280 OTS for new GTX285

GTX 285 is same as GTX 295, except it is merely one gpu or half power of GTX295, yet same GPU. GTX 280 will be SOLD OUT by end of Dec'8 & GTX 285 will be with GTX 295 for CES'9 in January. GTX 285 has 110% of Potential of GTX280.GameON!!!STeWie Drashek

unlucky charlie

looks like nvidia hater charlie demerjihan is wrong yet again. saying this card isnt possible and would use near 400W. why is this article complaining about 289w? sounds odd to me, because 4870 X2 uses more than that. anyway, glad i was correct and this so called 'insider' charlie is wrong. if nvidia sort the drivers, it cannot fail to be faster than 4870 X2 with the streams of GTX280 even with the smaller GTX260 bus

Crysis

I wonder if this will run Crysis at max settings....probably not, which makes this and any new cards that cannot, pointless to buy.

289 watts ?

They should just give it it's own
power cord like the Voodoo 5 6000's
Voodoo Volts power supply.
Also, how much heat is it throwing off?
Will I need to connect the thing into
my house's air conditioner ;-p

I don't get it

Why are people so worried about the whole bump issue...by the time the card 'may' fail it is outdated anyway and it's time for a new one. The bump issue (if present) would be just what we need to kick start this economy! I love to have some gadget fail on me by the time there's something better out. Gives me a good excuse to the wife ;-)
Off to replace my Garmin Nuvi now, which doesn't acquire satellites anymore...
Happy holidays everyone!

double trouble

Since Nvidia is still churning out duff chips (see Mac book article), this card is TWICE as likely to fail as it has two GPUs on it.

When it does fail as is inevitable with such a high power drain and the associated thermal cycling, warranty claims may be a problem as Nvidia may have gone bust over this issue by the time you need to claim.

Q:Would I Buy one?
A:Never, ever, Amen.
