Truphone enables Iphone to make cheap international calls

Beyond Wi-Fi range

TRUPHONE has released an Iphone and Ipod Touch application that allows users to make cheap international phone calls.

In the past, the software only worked over a Wi-Fi connection, but now can be used by Iphone users to make cheap calls from anywhere.

It will put the application in direct odds with the Apple-blessed carrier because it will mean they can make cheaper international calls.  We will wait and see if Apple kills the application.

Previously, Truphone's cheaper-than-usual international calls have used the carrier's cellular voice networks.

Truphone uses the local carrier network to establish a phone call, but it routes the call internationally using its own network of voice over Internet Protocol points of presence. And when the call is connected on the other end, it uses the local phone network to establish the connection.

Phone rates are only six cents per minute when people from the US dial a UK landline and 30 cents per minute when calling a mobile.

Normally they get charged $1.49 per minute when calling a landline in the United Kingdom or $1.69 when calling a UK mobile. µ
