Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff - Frank Zappa
GOOGLE'S YEAR-END Zeitgeist listing features for the first time search data from over 30 different countries, and it shows which search queries are globally popular and which are unique to certain cultures.
What the Zeitgeist compliation found was that searchers in this global village had mainly a strong interest in socialising and politics.
Social networks led with four out of the ten top fastest rising queries worldwide while the US elections held everyone else's interest around the world.
What's interesting in terms of politics is that while Sarah Palin didn't win the US election, she came out on top with her name as the number one rising query on Google's global list, while US President-Elect Obama came sixth.
However, cultural differences were still plentiful as, in Russia for example, although Dmitri Medvedev was elected as its president, the country's top search terms were the names of musical acts.
In Poland, the fifth fastest-rising search term was 'Jozin z Bazin', the name of an old 1978 Czech song that roughly translates to 'Joe of the Swamp'. The song became a sensation on YouTube, and the comedian who originally performed it is touring again.
Google claims that its Zeitgeist list is a true reflection of the times, with the billions of Google searches conducted every year lending insights into the interests and concerns of global society. µ

Google
I am confused....
Why are facebook, bbc, etc the top rated searches? Why would people search for them? Why not just type in the address bar?
Am I using the internet wrong??!
krs360: a lot of Internet users (and I mean, like 30%) doesn't know what the address bar is for, and they just type whatever they want into Google. Some of them even think Google is the starting point of the Internet.
You'll even see people typing "Yahoo" into Google to get to their emails.
Wife often does this. Home page has a search engine and the cursor defaults to the search term field. It's easier to just type in "google.com" and hit enter in the search field than to move the mouse cursor all the way up to the address bar.
LOL i totally understand you on that one. you would be amazed at how many people search for a social network instead of just going to the large ones directly.
i have seen clients type in the url in google search box.

The statistics that Zeitgeist has brought up seem interesting...and useful now that I have discovered a 24 year old bollywood hottie: Katrina Kaif.
Compliments to the South-Africans and to the Russians.
They seem to be bright enough not to make "youtube" appear in the top 10.
The link is RIGHT BELOW the search field!!
The Darwin award goes to India, though.
"Google" is at number 4.
Good to know that the world's IT outsourcing is in good hands....
