All the signed up companies have promised to make Android-based mobiles, lend programming expertise to the Android source code project, and offer products or services for the handheld devices.

I have trouble believing that. I wouldn't trust Sony any further than I could throw them. They have a closed-standard answer to everything, and they're often the first to push DRM too far, or to push proprietary formats (such as atrac3, minidisc, UMD etc.). Sure, they've all failed.
Android allows proprietary development in the licence, so I'm very worried that Sony will branch it to the extent that it's their own proprietary platform.
All other manufacturers I'd welcome on board.
