Wikipedia gets grant to lure new writers

Rant Everywhere Girl and the INQ need not apply
Thursday, 4 December 2008, 08:22

WACKYPEDIA is laughing all the way to the bank after collecting $890,000 from a US foundation which is supposed to attract new writers to the online encyclopaedia.

The outfit is supposed to be using the cash from the Stanton Foundation to create online tools that will make it easier for people to create content.

Wikimedia executive director Sue Gardner said that Wackypedia attracts writers who have a moderate-to-high level of technical understanding, but it excludes lots of smart, knowledgeable people who are less tech-centric.

She said that one of the organisation's key priorities is to attract those people and persuade them to help write and edit the online encyclopaedia.

It means that Wackpedia will be able to pay for a team of people who will be able to pinpoint what commonly prevents people from making Wikipedia entries and then eliminate those obstacles.

However unless this involves sticking a bullet between the eyes of fake penis expert editors who have chips on their shoulders about what is 'notable' or agents from rival magazines who like to shut down coverage of competition then there really is no point.

Few people would like to spend a few hours sharing factual information with people if some Daily Tech sock puppet demands that it is pulled on the basis that they don't like it.

I spent four hours writing up a biography once only to have it pulled on the basis that the wackypedia editor didn't believe it was true even though it was the result of an interview with the person in question.

It does not take rocket science to work out that people will not contribute if they are dealing with ignorant editors chopping their work on the basis of a hunch and their own reflected social inadequacy. ยต

Wrong people?

Shouldn't this go towards MediaWiki?

I've cried out for a better editor for Wiki editors.

The current editor was designed by programmers who think having a mark-up language, even one as simple as it is at present is good enough- It isn't!

Why can't they make a WYSIWYG editor like they have for open source web page editors?

A lot of would-be editors I've came across don't want to learn how to label up a table or even how to do the simple stuff like how to do headers.

They know how to use Word techniques, so why not base an editor on similar methods?

An in-place modern editor given to MediaWiki would benefit everyone, not just Wikipedia.

BAWWW

Jesus Nick, call the waaambulance and get it over with. Everywhere Girl is not notable. She has never been notable. If she ever becomes notable, the concept of Everywhere Girl will be one sentence in the trivia section at the bottom of the page.

These past few years of Wikipedia bashing have gone from mildly amusing to meh to stfu. Your bias is unprofessional in the extreme. At least Charlie frequently had a leg to stand on with Nvidia.
