Aussie anti-censorship protests get cash

Raising $30,000 a day
Fri Dec 05 2008, 08:41

PROTESTS against the Australian government's plans to censor the Internet are starting to get serious financial backing.

Whinging group GetUp has raised over $30,000 in less than a day to support their fight against the Government.

The group is surprised at the level of support it is getting at this stage of the campaign against the Rudd government's Rabbit Proof Fence plans which are similar to the Great Firewall of China censorship system.

GetUp said that the money will be put towards an advertising blitz designed to inform the public of the consequences of the plan.

Most techies say that the system will mean slower internet speeds and less information for Australians. It will lead to a blocking of pornography, political views, gambling and pro-abortion sites.

Almost 80,000 people have signed GetUp's petition and the organisation has created a widget that web site owners can embed on their sites, which allows their visitors to sign the petition and obtain more information about the filtering plans. ยต
