Iphone knocks Razr off the top

Motorola no longer the leading handset maker
Monday, 24 November 2008, 10:15

FRUIT-THEMED toymaker Apple will be opening the bubbly over the news that its 3G Jesus phone is the leading handset purchased by adult consumers in the US in the third quarter of 2008.

The aging Motorola Razr has held the top slot since Noah failed to get a signal on the ark, but now according to the NPD Group, a market research firm the Iphone had even stronger consumer sales than anyone could have expected.

At the same time less people were buying any phones. Consumer handset sales revenue fell 10 percent to $2.9 billion, even as the average selling price rose six percent to $88. In other words, in the world of the blind, the one-eyed Iphone is king.

However that has not stopped Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD declaring that the displacement of the Razr by the Iphone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality.

Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimised for messaging and other advanced Internet features, he said.

More than 43 percent of handset buyers said they needed a camera on their phone while 36 percent wanted the ability to send and receive text messages.

Mobile phones with a QWERTY keyboard experienced the greatest year-over-year rise in sales with 30 percent of handsets were sold with this feature in Q3 2008, versus just 11 percent the year before.

More than 83 percent of phones purchased were Bluetooth enabled and 70 per cent of phones purchased in Q3 were able to play music. µ

Hmmm...

"More than 43 percent of handset buyers said they needed a camera on their phone"

And they still buy the iPhone?

Does not compute, does not compute...

You get better images on a Roman mosaic!

They do have things like the N95 and the Sony cybershot phones in A Merry Car don't they?

FRUIT-THEMED toymaker Apple???

So, Is the creator of the best phone (well, at least one of the best out there in just a year), creator of the Best selling Digital player (iPods), # 4 rank on PC shipments in 2007 (and a little more in 2008), Creator of one of the best movie production software (Finalcut studio which was used in Gladiator, Lord of the rings and may other award winning films), IS A TOY MAKER? uh, I wonder what are the standards for this writer to be a Professional products company.

How many qualifiers do you need...

"leading handset purchased
-by adult consumers
-in the US
-in the third quarter of 2008"

And what age group is "adult" exactly? 20-35? I would be surpise for Iphone not to lead.

How strange!

The single phone with at least 300% more marketing and press exposure (and money) has also become the most popular in the US. How could this be, even beating a 5-year old phone (at least) with a new model.

This must be purely on technical merit.

cameras on phones

Its funny... all camera phones SUCK, didnt you know that? even the nokia ones, sure even throw some MP at it... it will still suck.

Another shocker, the Razr SUCKS, Moto have fell right behind other manufacturers at least in the uk for a good number of years now, over taken by the Samsung U series etc... its no surprise America has finally caught up.

We rarely get any requests for OTA settings for the Moto phones, surprisingly few recently.... which is good - since they never get sent out from our internal servers and the Moto site has been banned from our intranet due to it dragging down everything else.

Yes, I have an iphone... no, I never bought it for the camera (£60 O2 upgrade)

It doesn't matter how many pixels a sensor has if it's not getting enough light through small and lousy lens, and very small sensors with high resolution also suffer from large amount of noise. Also, show me a phone with a flash.... then I'll look at the photo capability.

The Nokia N series only sucks less than the iphone camera wise... that's not good enough for me.

Extra Extra , New Hyped phone beats old one... ...meh!

Who considers this news?

The iPhone launches mid summer against no competition except a lame Rokr, and they declare victory over all those who have fall and new year launches.

Guess what, RIM probably won the weel the Bold and Storm launch in, Oh my all hail RIM the iPhone is dead, then the TouchPro/Touch HD all hail HTC, etc.

Seriously, what's the Y2Y sales compared to the Razr, not just the quarter.

And ooooh, so impressive, 6.9 million handset sales... versus Nokia's 120 million, 1/20th ooh impressive.

Seriously, tell me what their sales # s are in the 2nd quarter of next year when they have nothing to launch.
