EU nations back SMS rules

Prices limited across the Bloc
Fri Nov 28 2008, 09:51

EU TELECOMS ministers have limited the price of sending text messages by mobile phone while roaming in the European bloc.

From the middle of next year, mobile phone companies will not be able to charge EU phone users more than €0.11 for SMS messages.

The move is part of broader package aimed at reducing the cost of using mobile phones when consumers travel within the 27-nation European Union.

According to the French secretary of state for consumer affairs Luc Chatel the wholesale price of downloading data over a mobile gear while abroad would also be limited to €1 per megabyte.

If the European Parliament approves the new measures as expected in March or April, they could be in place by July 1 as the peak summer travel season gets underway. µ

Remember the good things we get from Europe when the

Conservative Party start whinging about Europe again.

Roll on cutting the British exclusion of the 48 hour working week limit. 48 hours is enough for anyone, life is for living, not slaving.

Is that for domestic SMSs as well?

Is that for domestic SMSs as well?

'cos I'm currently paying 10p/txt (on PAYG). Mind you, if the exchange rate continues its slide, it'll end up less than €0.11.
