Techie fraudsters helped scam immigration tests

Two tin cans and a bit of string

YET AGAIN we witness the bumbling obliviousness demonstrated by the UKs authorities as two men armed with what can only be described as kids toys helped immigrants fudge their UK citizenship tests.

The Times grabbed hold of this story and recounted how the Plod described it as an “elaborate scam” involving “spy technology” and “sophisticated surveillance equipment.”

Exaggeration isn’t even the word for that blow-up. Basically the scamsters used a small camera, a microphone and a small earpiece, the whole los probably cost around £20 from their local electronics shop.

Steve Lee, 36, and Rong Yang, 28, from Redhill were convicted of helped immigrants to answer the questions, telling them which boxes to tick on the test.

What’s even more amazing is not the fact that the authorities don’t test for equipment such as this, but that this wasn’t even what got Lee and Yang caught out – it was the surveillance van outside the test building.

Witnesses were suspicious as they saw wires running from under the bonnet to the inside of the car.

Police found laptops, wires and other equipment needed for this kind of low-tech operation inside the van, along with the two “spies” and another man who had just taken his test.

Sergeant Dominic Washington, from Merton Borough Police said, “We will now be educating colleagues about this type of crime, and hopefully it’s raised profile and extra vigilance from police will deter others from getting involved.”

Both Lee and Yang have been sentenced to eight months in jail for three counts of facilitating a breach of immigration law. µ
