NVIDIA REPORTED a 74 per cent drop in profit, for its third quarter of 2008 but even this was better than Wall Street expected.
The firm said it made a net profit of $61.7 million, or 11 cents a share, in the three-month period. Last year it made $235.7 million, or 38 cents a share, in the comparable period.
Sales revenue fell to $897.7 million, from $1.12 billion last year. Adjusted income was 20 cents a share.
The firm said it took an $8.3 million charge so that it could sack much of its workforce.
CEO Jen-Hsun Huang promised that the company was doing fine. He claimed performance leadership at all GPU price points, claimed CUDA was changing the world, and said Nvidia was ready to stick its GPUs in Intel-powered notebooks instead of the rubbish integrated graphics circuitry Intel pumps out.
He pointed at Apple and Adobe as firms that have their heads screwed on and make good use of Nvidian technology.
He didn't mention bumps.
The firm said said it is downhill from here on in, however. Q4 numbers could be down by five per cent as it it is "unrealistic" to expect to flog much this Christmas.
NV shares were up 10 per cent after the announcement. µ

"He claimed performance leadership at all GPU price points"

I don't know what he's on, but I want some!
You are a true disgrace to journalism. Most of what you stated about Mr. Huang were not said in the conference call. For the record in its worst quarter ever Nvidia delivered more profits and cash flow than AMD ever did in its history. We know you do not like Nvidia but distorting reality is not acceptable. If you still have a job it speaks bad for your employer.
61mil. Isn't that a POSITIVE? It would seem you're doing pretty damned good to actually make money in a recession selling graphics cards. Not bad for all the BS reporting Charlie does eh? Where's his story?...LOL.

Whatever.

Meanwhile: AMD still losing money, ATI can't help...LOL

Not that I love either company, just trying to balance out Charlies ANTI-NVIDIA bs... :) I take that back, both give us great cards for the money as long as you're not crazy enough to spend over $250 or so.
"performance leadership" yeah right.....

Manufacturing duds, underperforming high power draining overpriced over hyped Nvidia crap... topped off with a barrel full of poo from the CEO.

Love it: Nvidia at is best...

Lets hope they can go pop soon...

I like all the Nvidiots bragging that they made a profit, I must admit thats impressive considering almost every part they have made in the last two years will suffer an early life failure and the lacklustre graphics performance to boot....

Oh did I mention DX10.1 isn't on the Nvidia Menu....

The smart choice is ATI/AMD

It´s really funny how many people like to read BS these days... And spend time to comment it. Every time someone speak bad of Nvidia, people also know as "Nvidiots" came to say that INQ is biased, complain that Charlie is a retard, but they don´t stop reading this site!!! Why not look elsewhere for "quality" information (nvidia´s ball-licking websites, there is plenty out there!). Maybe because they know it´s true but can´t let go of their so loved brand. The human mind is really funny!
