Russian hackers stole my homework

Hungry dog off the hook
Thursday, 20 November 2008, 08:33

TECH SAVVY kids of today are coming up with different excuses for failing to submit work on time.

Gone are the days of blaming the dog for eating the homework, new research suggests the average British teacher now hears 15 different homework excuses every week.

The best technique is attempting to blame modern gadgets that older staff members have failed to master.

Now the most common excuse for late homework include "the computer crashed", "the internet was down", "a printer failed to work" and "work was deleted by accident".

According to Sue Cooke, assistant head teacher at Wallington County Grammar School, in Surrey, in the good old days teachers were more likely to believe technology-related excuses. However, now that teachers are up to speed on gadgets, they are wising up to their tech trickery.

PIXmania.com surveyed 1,000 teachers as part of the research and found that on average a teacher hears three homework excuses every day.

More than 70 per cent of teachers noticed an upsurge in the number of pupils blaming technology for not doing homework and more than 68 per cent of pupils are now submitting school work typed on a computer.

Among the reasons for late homework:
• My dad's computer was hacked by Russians who stole it.
• My PC exploded when the dog peed on it.
• My computer crashed.
• I finished my homework but then I deleted it by accident.
• I could not print it out.
• The internet was down.
• I lost my laptop.
• A burglar stole my printed-out homework along with the computer.
• I accidentally tipped a bottle of cider over the computer and it broke.

There were still a few non tech excuses in the survey, which go to show that the old ones are still the best:

• My mum put my homework in the washing machine, and then burnt it as she tried to iron it dry
• The wind blew my homework into a pond, and then a swan ate it.
• My brother drove off with my homework in his lorry, and then he lost it in France. µ
