FRUIT THEMED TOYMAKER Apple has been peddling its new aluminium laptops as being really green.
The advertisement says that the aluminium and glass laptops are completely recyclable and are made without many of the toxins that are found in other laptops. It adds that it runs on a quarter of the power of a light bulb.
The news that Apple is such a green company will be news to many in Greenpeace who have been targeting the outfit for ages to clean up its act.
While aluminium might be recyclable the amount of power needed to produce it and melt it down into something useful afterwards gives it a huge carbon footprint.
Apple does not say what sort of light bulb it based its energy saving claim on but, since the Macbook runs on a 45-watt battery we guess it means a 180-watt light bulb... something you don't often see these days. Apple marketeers could equally have said that it runs on one per cent of the power of a light bulb and not mentioned that they were talking about a 4,500-watt stadium floodlight.
As far as Apple's green cred is concerned, when the Macbook Air was released, Greenpeace said the outfit was "getting to where it should be". This statement was seized by the kool-aid drinking Apple fan boy press as Greenpeace saying the MacBook was a winner. In fact it was saying the outfit was only making unwilling baby steps.
While Greenpeace said that, as a mercury and arsenic free laptop, the Air exceeded European Standards. It also raised the bar for the rest of the industry and the BFR and PVC free printed wiring on the motherboard is a big step fo rward. But with all the other toxins in it, you wouldn't want to give an Apple to your toddler to suck on.
Nevertheless, you would expect that that the MacBook, which is now being marketed as a Green machine would be better? Um... no. The only thing that makes it slightly better than the Air is that it has arsenic-free glass in the screen.
Greenpeace previously called Apple to task for its use of Brominated Fire Retardants and Polyvinyl Chloride in its products which appear to remain in the new Macbook.
Either way it is too early to call Apple green, although we guess the Apple fan boys will be claiming it is until they die. µ
Come on. That's a bit too stupid. I usally like the ironic funny style of the inquirer, but that's just stupid.
The Battery ist 45Wh Battery and that doesn't mean the Notebook actually consumes 45W. If it would die Battery would last for 1 hour. It lasts 4-5 with usual Internet, Office Workload. Ergo the Notebook consumes about 10Watt et voila for Apple's claim to be acccurate you need a 40Watt Light bulb.

And I'm pretty sure they had avarage workload in mind and not full load.

This is not really an Apple only feature since every decent designed Notebook has an idle Power of around 10W in this size, but it's not a stupid claim, like this articel seems to be.
The battery is 45 Watt hours capacity, not 45 watts continuous. It is expected to drive the laptop for about 5 hours, so that's 45/5 = 9 watts. Unless you're dimmer than a 40 watt bulb you should be able to figure out that it's using less than 1/4 of the power of one.
Next, if you'd bothered paying attention, you should have noticed the announcement that Apple HAVE removed BFRs and PVC from these models.
Finaly, rather than just hinting darkly about aluminium and glass needing energy to make, have you got any real numbers that prove that it's worse to use them rather than plastic? Absent them then you're worse than Greenpeace who like to sensationalise rather than do anything useful.
Sony’s Quantum Of Solace 007 Vaio Laptop chassis is crafted of Carbon Fiber (weighing under 1.5kg, or costing a hefty £3000); so F, sadly, it is not Greene ither, and the confident, womanising, swaggering, technologically masterful secret agents of HMSS MI6, shall have to go on searching for a clue. But it could be worse, old chap... His Jobsness could be posing as an environmentalist campaigner going around buying up rainforest to protect it from development, only to then to secretly bring in the marketing PR bloggers, to spin a complete rag-bag of contemporary anti-globalisation conspiracy theorist's pants of what Britain now stands for and against: Apple Fanboisdom, those deluded nutcases with their own Dr Strangelove-esque ambitions are Ivel.
"Wow, you have looked after yourself!"__ Double Oh-Oh status symbols. In the noughties. It seems, you can get rid of Q, tits, ass, Aston Martins, cocked eyebrows and suavity, but you cannot do without Jobs.
He wants it Green and shaken, not stirred. "Do I look like I give a damn?"
I don't get his gadget altogether... There. I've said me grin peace.
Primary aluminum production currently takes 2-3% of the worlds electricity to produce. To make matters worse, the bauxite ore used to refine the aluminum is obtained through stripmining...another environmentally friendly activity. It is one of the most environmentally tasking processes on earth.
Snorts.... You might as well have said "Apple pushing drugs". It would have been just as accurate.

Apple is a deceitful company used to having its delirious syncophants guzzle whatever "crapple" little Stevie Jobs and his gang are peddling that day.

As I've said in the past, I have been in the industrial automation and control systems field for 30+ years and have YET to see ANY apple gear. If ya can't do hard real time, ya ain't worth it. And no, you can't do hard real time using Windoze either.
45W is about right, do anything useful with your laptop and it will guzzle the battery in under an hour.

This explains why you can get 5 hours out of a MAC book laptop: You can't actually do anything useful with it.

10Watts dream on buddy...

LMFAO

So ALL of the worlds aluminum production takes 2-3% of the worlds electricity... and just how much of the world's aluminum production is making it's way into these notebooks? (which would equate to <<0.0000001% of the 2-3% energy consumption you mention) At least you can move to renewable energy (in theory), as opposed to hoping the plastic somehow magically learns how to biodegrade!

Good grief - if Apple donated money to the poor, people would write articles and comment how that's just because they are gouging consumers. If they gave away computers for classrooms, undoubtedly Nick would equate this to a drug dealer and Apple just trying to hook their customers early. Nothing will ever be good enough for Nick, et.al, who apparently have some emotional attachment to this company.

Apple charges what they think the market will bear - obviously they turn a nice profit, so apparently there is a market for these 'overpriced, monopolistic, evil, buggy, porr quality, [insert complaint here]' products - you can call it the 'dumb crowd' or the 'Apple religion crowd' or the 'elitist crowd' (who aren't clinging to their guns and religiion?), but frankly who cares?

I just find it amusing how some people seem to begrudge the fact that Apple is successful at what they do - if you don't like their products, there are plenty of other options on the market. It is amusing how much time Nick devotes to a company that has <15% of the PC market; can you imagine what this site will be like in a few years if Apples PC market share continues on its current trend?
You know I'd not take those people from greenpeace very seriously. They just talk, they do not propose and implement any solutions, at all. And worst, they sell themselves fo a few bucks. Take for instance the disaster they made in the delta of the Rio de la Plata. Hundreds of km^2 were burned last year producing a environmental disaster... did you hear them scream ? no. I did not, too. Crooks.
Don't agitate the macopaths, they're really sensitive about using recycled paper starbucks cups and turning there macbooks off sometimes. Anyway, good to see Apple is finally where they should have been at years ago.
