China makes stereo speakers thinner than paper
CHINESE BOFFINS have come up with a flexible stereo loudspeaker that is thinner than paper.
Writing in the December 10 issue of Nano Letters which we get for the spot the ball contest, Kaili Jiang, and his fellow boffin Shoushan Fan say that the technology could redefine ear buds, earphones, stereo loudspeakers, and other devices for producing sound.
It could lead to stereo speakers that can be inserted into the ears with an index finger or attached to clothing, walls, or windows.
They have hatched up a super-thin carbon nanotube (CNT) film which can transmit music and other sounds. They mounted a thin CNT film onto two electrodes to form a simple loudspeaker. The speaker produced sound with the same excellent quality as conventional loudspeakers, but without magnets and moving components.
They also managed to get it to play music from an MP3 player when it was on a moving flag. µ
