Microsoft is spammer's choice

Vole peddles everything
Wednesday, 26 November 2008, 08:15

MICROSOFT has been dubbed the spammer's friend making number five in the list of top ten spamming ISPs.

According Spamhaus.org, spammers are advertising links to sites that "peddle fake pharmacy products, porn, and Nigerian 419 scams" on Microsoft's Live.com and Livefilestore.com sites because they know that the Microsoft sites won't get blocked by antispam groups.

Brian Krebs, on his Security Fix Blog at the Washington Post, said that it has been warning Vole about the problem for ages but the outfit is putting its paws in its ears and going lah lah lah.

Other security companies, including McAfee and Marshal, have also been warning about increases in spam and scams on Microsoft-hosted sites.

However a spokesrodent said that spam and other abuse scenarios are not Microsoft-specific.

Vole's products do allow spammers multiple avenues to target consumers with malicious activities.

Then she trotted out the line, "We take protecting our customers' security and privacy seriously", which we guess means she was not wearing a false nose and moustache when she said it.

She added that Windows Live services for spam is explicitly prohibited by the terms of service, and Windows Live accounts that are found to be used by spammers are aggressively removed.

The top ten spam ISPs are:

1. cncgroup-hn
2. hostfresh.com
3. gilat.net
4. vsnlinternational.com
5. microsoft.com
6 sistemnet.com.tr
7 cnuninet.com
8 ecommerce.com
9 verizon.com
10 colocentral.com
