FCC wants porn-free free Web access for all

Internet without the money shot
Tuesday, 2 December 2008, 10:44

EVERYONE LIKES TO get something for nothing, which is probably why outgoing Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin says he’ll push for a free, but porn-free Internet service in an upcoming December meeting.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Martin proposes that all Americans should have unpaid access to a filth-free wireless Internet service as the airwaves are being auctioned off, left, right and centre.

Apparently Martin reckons the winning bidder should set aside at least 25 per cent of the airwaves for a slower, but free-of-charge service, filled with appropriate, educationally-enlightening content... without titties. The rest of the airwaves would be reserved for a faster, paid service, with all the one-handed surfing you can stomach.

Unsurprisingly, critics are already up in arms, with consumer groups clamouring that the FCC’s 'filtering' – or censorship – would be too extreme, whilst wireless carriers are just upset they will only be able to rip people off for 75 per cent of the airwaves. Although, the 'official' reason they’re upset is that the plan might interfere with their own radio waves.

Sigh, so the old adage of 'the best things in life are free' doesn’t apply to Internet porn then. What a swindle. µ

XXX

why oh why oh why cannot everybody agree to force adult content onto something like http://xxx. or a .xxx domain. IT is sooooo simple, it is scary.

That way it is all sorted, if you don't want your kids (or indeed employees) reading smut/alternative education all day, simply block that domain suffix/prefix. You could even request you ISP to block/allow it...that way content filters are smaller, and he internet becomes "faster" to the end user.

It doesn't effect ANY existing hand shufflers (providers or users) either...this really is not rocket science. Oh and it'll quieten down the "god squad" and other censorship quacks (and they'll still be able to access it to do their "research"...)

Beware, sex should be banned.

A bit like the BBC for the internet?

Government approved internet, like government approved TV, like what we have in the UK. The comedy is good, but to many dicks interfere and remove the edgy exciting people.

Jonathon Ross and Russel Brand, lost to a bunch of these types of hypocritical dicks! Of course the whingers weren't jealous of Ross's £100,000/week salary, lol. ;-)

Transparent

Just another attempt of an organization without guts and power to please their masters. All they want is to convert the Internet, and in particular the web, into another TV channel à la MAFIAA.

We can probably outsource to China and do it right?

A small flaw

Those forced onto the free service will really appreciate smut from peddlers tempted into the unpenetrated virgin market. Everyone's still a winner!
