AT&T BIGWIG Ralph De La Vega has let slip that an official way of allowing Iphone users to hook a laptop up to the Interwibble using the handset as a modem is coming soon.
There have been a couple of Apple-unfriendly methods of achieving mobile connectivity through the Ifoam kicking around for some time, but they all required that the device is jailbroken.
There's a lot of hoo-haa about pricing of data packages in the US, but as all kosher UK Iphones are tied to O2's unlimited data plans, that won't be an issue here... if the functionality ever makes it across the pond.
Judging by the way Apple normally treats UK Macolytes, we'll probably get it in about three years, a couple of months after the Interwibble implodes and is made illegal by the nanny state.

How about writing stories about real phones for once? hardly anyone gives a SH*T about apple and the iToy.
Anyone who knows anything about phones would not buy that feature limited locked down joke.
If you read the terms and conditions of the unlimited data bundle on O2 it forbids using the iphone as a modem to provide internet access to a computer.

Or at least it does in mine, think it;s a breach of the "fair usage" policy.
I bought a Blackjack in May 2007 with the net sharing application hidden in the system directory, created a shortcut and was all set. My coworker just got a Blackjack II for his wife, they removed the program and now offer tethering at an extra monthly charge. So I highly doubt that AT&T will just let it happen all willy-nilly, but then again they hate getting criticism form the iPhone community.
The iPhone is a real phone you idiot. Maybe you are so stupid you just can't work it.
Maybe you're so smart you have a good grasp of simplicity and basic functionality.
