Minority Report interface developed

BOFFINS BEHIND the Minority Report flick have come up with a real life interface which mimics that used in the movie.

Dubbed G-Speak, its inventors – who advised Steven Spielberg during the movie – claim it is the first major improvement in the computer interface since 1984.

The inventors say that the interface combines "gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels."

It basically "consists of an off-the-shelf DLP projector and special gloves embedded with reflective beads."

It requires a really costly infrared camera to work and a lot of room to operate but it's pretty impressive. Follow the L'Inq for video and more details.

But is it practical?

It looks cool, but their posture looks pretty tiring and I can't see this as being terribly intuitive.

Tools should help to make things easier, not cumbersome, awkward and impractical.

Might be helpful

Yes and no - being able to swipe and prod at the screen brings a physical aspect back to using a computer. Sitting entirely motionless probably isn't a very motivating way to work, so mixing it with motion and gestures might be a good thing.

gestural i/o

So, if I give it the old middle finger, does Windows shut down?
