Google Chrome reckons Facebook is phishing trap

Glitch in the matrix
Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 12:34

DEAR SIR

I am writing to you with an urgent and confidential proposal of friendship.

I am W. Ferret, husband of the late Marquess of Zuckerberg. After the death of my wife, as I was left clinging only to her beloved black sandals, I decided to carry on his life's work, befriending those for whom his service - The Face Book, which you may have heard of - had become a way of life.

However, my life has not been easy and I am sure the Government is after us. Since yesterday it seems that The Google has caught on to my plan and is now trying to shut down the work of my late wife Zuckerbug. Out of jealousy, spite or incompetence I do not know.

What I must tell you, my friend, is that if you use The Browser of The Google, (also known to some as Chrome, after the precious metal used to construct it), it will tell you that this missive from The Face Book may be attempting to 'phish' for your details.

I can humbly assure you that this is not the case, and whilst Google Chrome might be telling you that Face Book is some kind of perverse phishing scam when you attempt to load up that page, it is certainly not the case.

I expect the situation to be resolved imminently.

In the mean time, I must ask for your help. The Marquess of Zuckerbutt left me US$15,000,000,000 in a bank account which I am unable to access, and I require a minimum of 5,000 friends on The Face Book before I am granted its key. If you accept me as a friend on the Book, I shall guarantee you your share of the money.

I trust the small phishing alert will not distract you from this important task for which I thank you. Also, if the same thing happens in FireFox, please just be patient. I am working on it.

THANKS AND BEST REGARD

MSSR. W. FERRET

your crunchy tech l'inq says that the problem was on facebook's end and other browsers were experiencing this too (i don't know why the INQ chose to blame only chrome):

"Looks like this is more of a problem on Facebook’s end than a browser-related issue. We’ve seen phishing scams targeting Facebook users in the past, on multiple occasions, but this is something completely different.

It could have something to do with Facebook Connect (which they just started rolling out with a bunch of launch partners), anyone have any good theories about that?

Update 4: the issue is topic of discussion in the Facebook Developer Forums (here and here). An administrator acknowledges that fbcdn.net was listed as a phishing site but that the problem has now been resolved, yet I’m still getting the warning message.

Update 5: problem appeared to have occured due to a bad advertisement link. The issue has now been resolved."
