School reunion site sued by duped punter

No friends to reunite with
Thursday, 13 November 2008, 07:39

CLASSMATES.COM is in hot water over a spam email it sent a bloke claiming that his classmates wanted to get in touch with him.

However, when Anthony Michaels signed up for to the site and shelled out $15 for the premium membership, he found out that no one was interested in him at all.

Claiming he had been scammed, the San Diego resident has sued Classmates.com and is seeking class action status.

The case said that when Michael's got into the site, he found no one he knew was listed and the advertising was a straight lie.

He said that there are hundreds of thousands of Anthony Michaels around the country who were similarly duped.

Michaels wants to force the company to refund millions in subscription dollars and fine the company for deceptive advertising. µ

If this lawsuit will stop the incessant spamming of my email addy, then more power to him. I get reunion requests from classmates.com for people who don't even share my name.

@Phoenix

Well I don't remember anybody sharing my name when I was in class.
That said, if somebody wants to contact me, an email will do fine - as long as it is from his/her own mail account.
I work by whitelists - it's amazing the amount of crap I simply never see.
Of course, it may just be that I have missed genuine offers to meet like that, but I really doubt it.
Personally, although I hate spam with a passion, I think this guy is just trying for his fifteen minutes and making a fuss to get a refund. Pathetic.

thats a start

if we all had the time and resources to do what michael has done, we would never give companies a chance to screw us around. But were all a bunch of nancy boys.
