Rambus tries to ban Nvidia imports

Lawyers all a-twitter
Friday, 7 November 2008, 17:44

RAMBUS HAS A long history of being rather prickly about what it perceives to be it's IP, and now it is aiming that perception at Nvidia again. This time the legal eagles are urging the ITC to go after imports of NV products.

The reason we say perception is that several of the IP-related actions have gone for Rambus, several against, and there has been no clear decision either way. You roll the dice, you take your chances. Only in court, it takes a decade or 12 and costs companies a number with a minimum of six trailing zeros.

This time, Rambus is alleging that Nvidia and it's partners are infringing on nine patents covering DDR, DDR2, DDR3, LPDDR, GDDR, GDDR2, and GDDR3. The partner list is a who's who of companies selling Nvidia, basically anyone bringing NV products into the US is named.

This latest twist seems to be a lever in the ongoing lawsuits, note the plural, between the two companies. If this works the way it normally does, the ITC will warm the chairs they occupy for years, then ban something four generations out of date. Wads of press releases will follow.

You have to love the system, and if this goes the way things normally do, buy your Nforce 2s now before they are made illegal. µ

This will probably be over sooner than you think

The ITC is designed to resolve patent disputes quickly by either saying a patent wasn't infringed or barring items from import into the US if they do infringe. This can often lead to settlements if the plaintiff has a good case. This link says the average case now lasts about 15 months: http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1202423346828

Their time is coming

Poor Nvidia when will they learn they can't keep screwing people with their crappy products. I hope they go bankrupt.

Rambus

is a company with a jerk mentality. To sit on a standards committee and get your proprietary technology embedded into the new spec without disclosing your patent applications... That's a crappy low blow. I would have ordered them stripped of their patents just for that.

LOL, Rambus

CEO of RAMBUS: "Whoa, we need to make some money!"
Lawyer for RAMBUS: "Who can we sue this year?"

Is RAMBUS even a real company anymore? Or do they just sue everyone to make their money? When is the last time they actually did something like, say release a new product?

RamBus needs to be exported

RamBus is a plague to the computer industry. They lack morals and ethics and love to do business by bullying. To anyone who thinks MS or Apple are big bad companies, do some research on RamBus. The company disgusts me.
