AMD Atom smasher due today

Better and worse, but no handcuffs
Thursday, 13 November 2008, 08:24

AMD WILL TALK about its upcoming netbook CPU in few hours, something that should shake up the market. Technically, it won't be an Atom killer but, on a platform level, it could make things very interesting for Intel.

The basic part is nothing more than a shrunken older core, and that won't be power-competitive with Atom in any way. It should trounce it for performance, though. It will be paired with a much more modern and efficient chipset, the combination of which should be even with Atom + i945 for wattage.

So, the matchup, come January, will be fairly even on power but AMD will have a performance lead, supposedly a quite noticeable one if the early rumors pan out. AMD will also likely price it pretty cheaply, giving Intel another potential headache.

AMD's killer app for their Atom Smasher is quite simply Intel policy. Intel's anti-cannibalisation practices are generally hated among the OEMs for some things, loved for others. They hate the fact that they can't make full sized netbooks, full featured netbooks, or in general, differentiate. These guys simply hate handcuffs.

Enter AMD with its new netbook CPU. The pitch? Easy, make what you think will sell, not what we think won't hurt our other sales. We are cheaper, and like-for-like have about the same battery life, but our CPU performance and graphics are much better. What's an OEM not to love.

There are several design wins already from the whispers we have been hearing. But no word as to how substantial they are... yet.

Look for close AMD partners to start letting things out. The second generation part, due mid-year, is going to be the one to watch. Instead of a shrunken core, it will be a shrunken core mildly tweaked with all the low-power fabbing tricks AMD can throw at it.

None of these new parts will challenge Atom pico-watt for pico-watt, but platform for platform, they should make things tough for Intel.

Couple that with a vastly superior chipset, lower prices, and the promise of no handcuffs, and netbook sales should be rather interesting in Q2-Q3/09. µ

Stuck this here to Give Shanghai Chance.Ahso, Low Power Processors' Seem route to Next Generation, & AMD with So much less, NO Fabs, apparently unneeded, AMD Light. Very Light. Yet, AMD. I'd Push TV Tuner cards, As Public Loves Stuff. Especially ATSC & Hdmi w/ blu. & super sound:10.1, Dx 11 & 4.2 exe inst cap, plus whole Goober loads of Stuff. Maybe AMD/ Mains with whole system(Proc, Main & Graphic (w/hdmi sound) from factory. after all($500 item aint cheap), its just bunch o' cheap parts, that if done right, out do other private assemblers.

Ahso Intel is NASDQ & Stable in mid 13, while AMD is NYSE & looking for Turnaround Point, Desparately, with Unforseen Stock Market Probs, AMD is Getting Twice Slap, with opteron sales falling off up to 50%. Worse, shangai is ?better than previous Total loss of: well I just won't say,yet direction is most likely up in quality Now.

Gaming possibilities

What would really be interesting is if software firms looked at the possibility of writing gaming titles that are compatible with the Atom and the "Atom Smasher". Could make things interesting, yes?

hmmm....

I think I have an idea what AMD's Atom-beater is...Its a licence built version of the VIA Nano connected to an AMD Hypertransport based mobo!
You all will think that this preposterous, both VIA and AMD (well sorta) are fabless, that means that AMD will benefit from increased netbook sales and TFC will gain from the new customer. Such an agreement will mean that AMD has to pay licence fees to VIA, but that is a small price to pay.

AMD love

Hi, my name is Charlie and I love AMD. I review parts I haven't touched yet and write down bombastic headlines based on pure speculation. That is what the readers want to read anyway. If I write so much about AMD's superiority, maybe it will come true.

ha

It would be fantastic if AMD teamed up with a'nix provider and released a good linux flavour for it... as well as a good/simple SDk for people to write games themselves, AKA Amiga days :-)

Re: Didn't you say it was cancelled?

At "Titius". The project remains, its just that the initial attempt was scrapped.

The original 45nm "Bobcat" was canceled. In its place is the 32nm one called "Ontario", planned for 2011. Its a dual core with a GPU.

Intel screwing customer, again.

by forcing prices high.

USA sucks for consumer rights, how come so many USA companies overcharge for their products and their people just take it?

If you like Intel cpu's, then you better pray that AMD are competitive because that will force both to deliver better products at lower prices. Competition and effective laws helps us, come on Yankees please push for some better laws. Don't allow Intel to force prices higher than they should be if market forces were to apply freely.

Intel = against the free market.
