Boffins come up with ideas for Quantum computing

Preserves electrons, cleans out dead cats
Tue Nov 18 2008, 07:51

UK BOFFINS have written a paper which claims to fix one of the glitches in a Quantum computer.

One of the problems, other than the computer getting clogged up with potentially dead cats, is the life expectancy of your average electron. Since they don’t hang around that long, it makes it difficult to store data, which makes it impossible to get a decent quantum porn collection onto disk.

Your average quantum bits need to spin to run a program, but sometimes the quality of electrons degrades and creates quantum noise. This means that users could lose control of the program running and end up in another dimension where implausible things are a reality, like Apple being a serious computer company, or Microsoft going Open Sauce.

Gavin Morley, one of the authors of the paper and a researcher at the London Centre for Nanotechnology used magnetic states of the electrons to store data.

By applying a certain magnetic field, the boffins could determine the state of an electron without bringing in disturbance, giving them a 5,000 percent longer life.

The secret is to target the phosphorus atoms in the silicon, maybe the cats don’t like it. µ

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
