BLETCHLEY PARK, home of the famous World War II codebreaking centre has been given a generous donation from English Heritage for urgent repairs to the grade II listed building.
The £330,000 donation from the trust will be one of the biggest this year and will go towards to vital roof repairs needed on the building which was home to one of the most significant moments in history.
The Bletchley Park Estate is the centre from which the notorious German Enigma was broken in the Second World War – the cracking of this code was so imperative as it ultimately resulted in the shortening of the war.
The park’s interior, which is now on display to the public as a museum is in danger of being ruined beyond repair due to the damaged and leaking roof.
Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage, said, “English Heritage is committed to saving this fascinating group of buildings so that future generations can understand something of the enormous human endeavour which went on there.
As well as ornate country homes, English Heritage is also keen to restore these modest wartime huts at Bletchley as they are of huge historical importance and it is vital that they are retained if people are to understand the significance of the whole estate, he continued.
Simon Greenish, Director of Bletchley Park Trust, welcomed the announcement from English Heritage saying, "This is a momentous event for the Bletchley Park Trust, its supporters and the nation.”
Greenish continued to say that this major contribution from English Heritage clearly demonstrates the historical importance of the site and the need to ensure it is protected for the future.
The Bletchley Park Trust has raised £5 million to develop and restore parts of the site- by opening it to the public as a museum the site has gained some commercial funding, yet this clearly hasn’t been a substantial amount.
In addition to this substantial £330,000 grant, English Heritage is in discussions with the Bletchley Park Trust and Milton Keynes Borough Council on a conservation area partnership scheme to secure the restoration of the historic wartime huts over three years from next April.
English Heritage will provide funding to the amount of £100,000 per year - if match funding can be provided by the partners to create a fund of £600, 000 for a rolling programme to restore the World War II code-breakers huts, this historical park will be finally restored to its original glory. µ

Emma, you should have done more research. This British version based on a lie which can not continue.

I hope that they find a little money to acknowledge the role of Poland for this gift, we shall see.

For your education, Poland broke the Enigma code (in 1932 by Marian Rajewski) and transferred the knowhow plus a reconstructed Enigma machine to the French and the British, before the outbreak of WWII.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_Rejewski

It is much the same about the role of Polish soldiers and fliers in the Battle of Britain.

Especially, the truth about Squadron 303 (the Kosciuszko Squadron) being responsible the highest number of enemy kills (126) during the Battle of Britain i.e. in operation through September to October 1940.

The Enigma and the contribution of thousands of Poland’s best to the British WWII effort was ‘rewarded’ by a complete sellout to Stalin (at Yalta), with Poland being the only nation not allowed to participate in the British WWII victory parade.

As a consequence, millions of Poles were deported and tortured for the next forty years. The British Government is yet to apologize for this shameful act … instead, the lies continue.
Expect the entire complex to be repainted in English Heritage corporate colours very very soon. Whilst it is of utmost importance to save Bletchley Park, I shudder at the mention of English Heritage or Heritage Lottery for that matter. They're both bloated corporate behemoths run by administrators intent on making templated visitor attractions.
Thanks very much for highlighting this, my campaign blog is at www.savingbletchleypark.org if anyone wants to keep up to date with progress on funding etc.
As far as I remember Enigma was broken by Polish math scientists in the eve of the war (ca 1938). All the Hollywood movies (British as well) do not complicate the history told to the youngsters. However INQStaff should be better educated I presume.

Agreed that during the war in the Bletchley Park nazi correspondece was decrypted and Engima cracking process was improved.
