IT’S BEEN IN the pipeline for some time now, but it finally looks like Nvidia has taken a deep breath and given its GeForce GTX 260 216 a bit of a price cut.
A listing on Novatech shows the GTX 260 216 going for £210 including VAT, down a bit from its previous £230.
Nvidia must have finally twigged that with AMD snatching more and more discrete graphics card market share – about 40 per cent in Q3 2008 – the only way to curb losses and hold AMD at bay is to cut prices and become more competitive.
AMD's ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB has seen some dramatic price slashes, which has made it difficult for Nvidia to compete, but now, by trimming the price on GTX 260 216 a bit and releasing the Forceware 180 series drivers, Nvidia may be back in the game.
With better Folding@Home performance and PhysX support at a price which now pretty much matches the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, Nvidia seems to have made the right decision. The only question is how much the firm’s margins will suffer from the price drop, seeing as the GT200 series is not exactly cheap as chips to produce.
Then again, the firm could just be clearing out its stock rooms to make way for newer 55nm parts. µ

I still think the ATI cards are better value. Winning a F@h benchmark doesn't really matter to me. PhysX is so not important either. What matters most to me is best DirectX 9, 10 and OpenGL performance along with peformance per watt. So ATI wins! (For me anyway) Ohh Sylvie!!!
since amd announced that they will start making their own vid card chips this is going to bring prices so low, because as of the moment, when we buy a vid card off dammit
we have to pay for design (obviously) and manufacture (obviously) but because dammit outsources its build, they also have to chuck on some extra costs, that is materials, and also cost to make them for dammit so take easily 30% off prices, once we start baking at home, and watch Nvidia cry me a river.

I am in such a good mood atm, when I hear a big greedy company like these 2 actually start price wars, and the consumer benefits so much. seeing Nvidia loose 40% of integrated GFX, that is just music to my ears. if they keep it up with gaming cards, then watch dammit intercept the football and just run with it all the way to the end zone BABY!
GO DAMMIT (must keep spaces to keep the peace)
you go girl ~!
Sylvie Barak as much as we like you could you please let Charlie write nvidia articles. You are way to positive for the nvidia hates such as myself which seeks to personally destroy the company any chance we get.
hope that Nvidia stays in business. AMD is going to be infused with a great deal of cash to shore up their money bleeding operations, but an investor friend warned me against buying stock in either last year and holds to that advice. Now he says he expects AMD to have to be "reorganized" within 3 years (read: bankruptcy) and he sees the ATI division being sold to someone else IF a buyer can be found.

As far as F@H or PhysX, well PhysX is pretty cool.
