Microsoft makes a phone with Nvidia

Mediocrity made mobile, Linux sold out
Friday, 21 November 2008, 12:23

WHAT DO YOU get if you take an Iphone, remove the clean UI, user friendliness, nice industrial design, battery life, cachet, functional OS, and in general everything else that makes it worthwhile? The new Microsoft phone, powered by Nvidia.

Yeah, you heard it right, MS is going to make its own branded phone, after all, everyone kicking the company around the block has one, so it should too! If you were wondering why Nvidia never mentions the phrase Linux when talking Tegra, even though it is the most appropriate OS for the chip, now you know. NV appears to have sold Linux out to get the MS flagship deal, how nice of them.

The phone is slated to be announced at 3GSM this coming February, so if you plan on attending, please look surprised when MS unveils it. No word on when it will hit the streets but it probably won't be long after that.

We think this 'me too' phone will have all the success of the Zune. With that device, MS showed they know how to make an MP3 player that people want, great design, a UI that is vastly superior to the competition, and enough added bells and whistles so it is sure to disappoint the eight kids who find them under a Christmas tree.

Then there is the whole problem of partners. MS loves partners, using the Zune as an example, it is hard to see why anyone would not stick with the firm. Has MS ever up and decided to cut it's entire partner ecosystem off with a hearty 'too bad'? I mean this year. Forget about 2006. Really. Please. While we haven't heard any specifics yet, it is the MS MO to surprise their loyal partners and take the market they created. We would be quite surprised if they didn't do it this time.

In any case, well-placed sources tell the Inq that the phone is powered by the long-promised Nvidia Tegra chip. This means battery life measured in minutes and a long list of promised features that mostly work as long as you don't mind the odd bout of data corruption. Ironically, this is quite the natural fit for an MS OS.

In the end, we only have three months or so to wait. It has all the pieces to be a stunningly mediocre product, with none of the things that made the Iphone or Gphone great. About the only thing you can say is that they have a mostly functional store in place now. ยต

CDMA anyone?

Where the heck arethe CDMA phones? I would like a iPhone but my TSP only does CDMA. There's not enough reason to switch to another TSP just to get an iPhone. Guess I'll be staying with my LG Muziq for a while yet.

What's Linux got to do with this?

If Nvidia chose Microsoft as their software provider, its there choice. Why drag Linux into this issue? It has nothing to do with them.

Nvidia is a business. If they don't see the benefit of Linux or the associated open source development model. Its their choice. (ATI/AMD is the opposite).

If you don't like Microsoft, that's fine. But don't use Linux or open source as an excuse to justify your disliking of MS. (This also applies to the other writer, Nick Farrell)...Linux will have its time to shine in the future. But it must be done on its own merit, not by putting down others.

If you keep this up, people will grow tired and visitor numbers of this site will drop. (Something no one wants).

Seriously Charlie, stick to technical articles. They're a joy to read.

UMM where have you been?

Microsoft has had smart phones and PDA phones for years. They are reliable, and they predate the iphone by a decade, have received regular updates.

Hygenic phone

It looks like a panty shield. To make it worse, the device featured in the linked vid is _red_.

All in all, a vulgar device.

remember...

"...nice industrial design..." with hairline cracks. I guess the logic is that if they ship it already broken, then the customers can't break it on their own. Screw it all, I'll stick with my land line.

I like the free Nokia

An acquaintance I know got a free Nokia cell phone with a $15 a month pay-per-use service from some cut-rate outfit nobody ever heard of. The trouble is, the rig is bluetooth enabled, so it works just fine with devices such as the Nokia N810 Linux palmtop. The point? It's on top o' yor head there pilgrim!!!
The point is, nobuddy needs the iPhone, its inflated outrageous price, nor even its insane monthly usage fee. You can get "purty much" the same utility with lo-kost alternatives featuring Linux and Bluetooth interoperability. I dare say some far thinking visionary is going to come up with a super wiz bluetooth chatter that costs $5 to buy on dealextreme, kicks iPhone chatter in the nutz, and scores a big win with practical minded female teen text chatters wurdldwide. How come? Because in a wurdldwide recession people are going to, one day or another, resent getting ripped off by Apple any more. AND by Microsoft too.
There, I said it.

Old news

This is an obvious joke from MS, and either the INQ is slow at telling jokes or the author is an r-tard. The video was posted 1 YEAR AGO, the moronic INQ author, sorry journalist, saw it and published the 'news' as gospel.

OMFG

You are either an idiot or posted this as a joke. I hope it's the latter because I enjoy your rants about NV.

I mean badmouthing the iPhone is one thing, but the ZUNE? The spectacularly unprofitable flaming failure that is used as a verb for "to fail?"

Evidently Charlie Hasn't Seen the Tech Demos

Here is a tech demo of the platform in action on Windows Embedded I believe.

Great

I don't know if it was supposed to, but this article made me laugh pretty hard due to the outrageously high levels of mental retardation that the writer exhibits. First of all, if your going to take hits on how the microsoft os is not functional, take a look at the iPhone's os. Heres a few challenges: go watch video and audio in your browser with skyfire at up to 4 times the speed as safari. It's a little dark in here, can use turn on the LED flashlight on the back of your phone please? Oh, no, guess you cant. And don't bother taking a picture with that crappy 2 mp camera. How many apps can you download, and btw since your so gung-ho on things being open source, I'm sure you love how apple personally throttles everything that gets into the app store. And omg the battery! Even if the battery life on every single smartphone ever made sucked royally (which is clearly incorrect), at least you can change the battery. The options are great too. Lets see, apple offers you...... 1 option! The one phone they make, because it's obviously perfect.

Really, I feel sorry for you. You're living in a world of disillusion, and unfortunately it will take a while until you are finally able to admit to yourself that your device is very limited and does pretty much nothing special.

I won't even start on the zune vs iPod, since I could write a novel on how superior the zune is to the iPod. Thats for another time.

By the way smartphones have been around since 1992 starting with IBM. Palm and nokia began to develop smart phones also, and did start before MS. However, calling MS the me too company is ridiculous. Since apple was last to the party.

You should also check out the HTC Touch HD! You would love it. Its exactly the same size as an iPhone, but has a better processor, higher resolution, bigger screen, and you can do anything on it since it has windows mobile! The wonders of technology!

NVIDIA Sources

Charlie, are these the same "well-placed sources" that told INQ that NVIDIA was going to lay off 1000 employees in an article INQ posted right before NVIDIA announced a better-than-expected quarter and zero layoffs? I don't know why I even read your articles any more. Your articles are so full of BS, and completely void of facts. Is INQ ever going to fire you? So many people are demanding it on this site, and people like myself are finding tech news elsewhere because we cannot believe 50% of the articles INQ posts.

Are you all idiots

Do you REALLY think that's a real ad?? COME ON. Not even MS is that bad at making ads - and they are bad!

This is such a fake

Do you get paid for this?

You must be kidding--a link to a year old fake youtube video counts as an article? Do you actually get paid for this crap or is it a blog for your twisted version of fun? Still waiting for your other 'exclusive inside information' about killing off the chipset division, laying off the entire company, running out of cash, etc to come true you hack.

Oi!

Don't imply that Charley is a penguinista please, we don't want him!

Oh, and back on topic, this article reaches new heights of bias, fail and shoddy "journalism". As much as I love people kicking Microsoft, stick to the facts, there are plenty to choose from.

wow

I've got to hand it to you Charlie, you sure know how to make an impact. In your 24/7 hunt for "news" that will work as vehicles for your anti-MS ranting you seem almost oblivious or blind when it comes to fact checking, or even picking up cues about whether the "news" you're reporting comes from a joke or not.

You insult journalism

See http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2008/11/25/is-microsoft-making-its-own-phone.aspx - You are biased toward Apple, you iBoys. It's a shame you insult MS. They make good products and you put them down.

Battery Life?

Battery life in minutes? You must be thinking of the Iphone. The Tegra chipset has incredibly low power usage. Thats right I said incredible! Knowing microsoft the phone will suck, but the battery will last forever and the hardware itself will blow away the iphone. Tegra is a great platform

The Zunee-phone video is a more recent demo

What is so hard to understand about a link to a joke ad in an article that is being sarcastic about a real product when there is no picture or video released yet about it?

Although this demo of the Microsoft Zune-phone is a little bit more recent
