European library swamped by users
THE EU'S NEW Europeana digital library was forced to close temporarily on its launch Thursday after it was swamped by Internet users.
A spokeslibrarian said that the library was swamped by 10 million hits in the first hour and in two hours had to be shut down while techies doubled the computer capacity.
The site, which allows access to more than two million digital objects like films, paintings, photographs, sound recordings, maps, manuscripts, newspapers, documents and books officially opened in the morning.
The spokesman said the site had now been set up with six servers instead of the three that it had in the morning.
He said that the Library now thought it could survive the next storm of interest.
Europeana, currently has around two million digital items online. It cost about €2.5 million to set up and aims to have 10 million works available online by 2010.
Currently the site is dominated by the French who, after making a song and dance about how the Google version of the library was too American, demanded that the EU set up something for the glory of European culture.
Currently half the content is French which has led some critics to suggest that the whole thing was an attempt by Paris to get Euro funding to push its culture on other nations. µ

Ironically what the french culture now tries to achieve is closing down internet, bit of a flaw in planning there somewhere?
I'm sorry, but to be able to push one's culture, one has to HAVE a culture. I wouldn't call what has passed for behaviour in France over the millenium as "culture". Not unless you also think that gays have achieved a higher level of civilization.

The real irony is if you were to ask Prince Charles for his candid opinion about the British Aristocracy: "It's actually a bit of a complete rip-off if yore askin me...."
It's obvious that a representative of the New World is most apt to comment on Culture.
By the way, are you finally finished talking about racism against blacks on your side of the pond, or is that 200-year old argument still running just as strong as it was last week ?
