THE AUSSIE government's plans to build a Great Internet Rabbit Proof Fence are floundering with even kiddie welfare groups saying it is a jolly bad idea.
The Aussie government thought that it would protect children by mimicking the censorship antics of Communist China but, much to its surprise, has found that the idea is a wee bit unpopular.
But up until now it could claim it was only protecting children from porn and paedophiles and that the legions of hyper-protective mums, who want to wrap their precious snowflakes in bubble wrap, would still vote for them.
However according to the Sydney Morning Herald some children's welfare groups are now saying that that the mandatory filters are ineffective and a waste of money.
Holly Doel-Mackaway, adviser with Save the Children said it was better to educate kids and parents.
The Great Rabbit Proof Fence was "fundamentally flawed" because it failed to tackle the problem at the source and would block legitimate sites.
She said there was no evidence to suggest that children were stumbling across child pornography when browsing the web.
Millions earmarked to implement the filters would be far better spent on teaching children how to use the internet safely and on law enforcement.
Doel-Mackaway said that kids are often exposed to the abusive behaviours of adults often and we need to be preventing the causes of violence against children in the community, rather than blocking it from people's view.
She pointed out that many websites, including her organisation's own, would be blacklisted because it references a lot of its work that it does with children in fighting commercial sexual exploitation.
James McDougall, director of the National Children's and Youth Law Centre, said the mandatory filters simply would not work and children should be able to make decisions for themselves.
If parents were that worried they could easily install PC-based filters on their computers if they desired, or ask their internet providers to switch on voluntary filtering. µ

Well, finally someone with a reputation who understands that the money is better invested in education and parenting than wasted on censorship and security nazis.
This has been nutty for so long it's not funny anymore. You can have CSI showing corpses all day long, with some of them mutilated. But showing two consenting adults making love, now THAT'S bad.

The watchdog groups claim that they're afraid the kids will copy the behavior. So what would you rather have your kids copy? An ultra-violent action flick? Or a porno? Remember, people almost never die in pornos. And if the kids are going to copy the behavior, I think it's better to have unprotected sex then get in a gun or knife fight.

"Mommy, why are those people wrestling naked?" "OMG!!! Quick, honey, put on that cage-fighting DVD you rented so Jonnie doesn't get harmed by the horrible porn!"
Sad that the violence and sex industry has for ages used each other in white wash scenarios-- In what is worst than the other!
The democratic style has never fatigued from what is best taught since the garden of Eden to all the worlds courtrooms-- The class of finger pointers!
And guess what, the mess is still there rampant growing like a cancer covered over with selfish pride and forcedly taken rights trampling over common sense.
The filthy are driven to eliminate anything that opens them to reprehension. Ridicule is their favourite weapon. So figuratively either they don't wish children in the same room unless common ground is issued and set or they are blatantly abusing children.
So to finalize if porn is on the net to stay and the .sex .xxx domain was rejected, to parents out there, how about a movement to kill the issue by going the other way, how old a person must be to access .com? Have a credit card? And so on? Start the domain .kid The porn industry if they say anything on this then they shoot themselves and reveal they... they are truly after YOUR children! Not that it's not already proven.
