The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to get the most feathers with the least hissing - Jeane Baptiste Colbert
THE CANADIAN TEENAGER who ran away from home on October 14 after his Xbox was confiscated has been found dead in a cornfield.
Fifteen year old Brandon Crisp jumped on his bicycle and fled his home after his father took away his gaming console – Mr. Crisp was concerned after the boy’s obsession with online game 'Call of Duty 4' had began to change his behaviour.
Brandon had been stealing money and skipping school which caused his grades to slip – noticing that the Xbox was perhaps the problem, his father forbade him from playing on it.
Shortly after the confiscation Brandon left home and was last spotted in a popular hiking and cycling path near Barrie, Ontario, north of Toronto.
The $C50,000 reward offered by Xbox creators, Microsoft brought a group of 1600 volunteers into the equation who searched the area fruitlessly, finding only the abandoned bicycle with a flat tyre.
Since then nothing had turned up in connection with the boy, until Wednesday when sadly, Brandon’s body was found by hunters in a cornfield.
Mr. Crisp deeply regrets taking the game system away, he admitted in an interview with Canada’s Globe and Mail that he had not realised quite how important it was to his son.
Experts understand Mr. Crisp’s concern for the boy, as they claim that games such as Call of Duty 4 form online bonds – Brendan’s parents were worried that these bonds might lure their son away.
Mr. Crisp put out a warning to other parents saying how obsessed children can get with their games saying, "This had become his identity, and I didn't realise how in-depth this was until I took his Xbox away."
This is an issue many parents have to deal with, he continues, "I just took away his identity, so I can understand why he got so mad and took off. Before, I couldn't understand why he was taking off for taking his game away."
This sad case highlights just how important games are to the youth of today, with more realistic experiences and the opportunity to create strong bonds online, devastation such as Brendan demonstrated is likely when the experience is taken away. µ

Whats the matter with you guys?
This young kid died when he ran away.
If you dont feel sympathetic at least don't try to make his death funny or try to get a cheap laugh from it.
It makes me suspect people like you
had a hand in his death.
Just because he wasn't your son
or your brother or your friend
desnt give you the right to
bash a dead kid.
None of you bashers knew this kid
so you can't judge him or reduce his life to a few sentences you read on this site.

This death should once again substantiate how many youth are simply out of touch with reality, thanks in part to video games. If this kids identity was based on obsessive playing of video games, he was doomed. His father should have removed the Xbox a long, long time ago and set this kid down and adjusted his attitude so the kid actually had a life, instead of an unhealthy obsession.

Another wasted life down the drain as the result of the kid making bad choices.
We all know it had to do with more than just a damn Xbox. His parent's probably sucked. Hahaa... seriously though, that sucks. : \
Whilst this is pretty horrible, what's even sicker, is Microsoft used this terrible incident as a cheap publicity stunt. (they could have easilly stayed anonymous about it, but chose to shout form the rafters about how they cared about XBox owners, and here is some money...).
This sad situation just points out how important it is for parents to keep an eye out for their offspring. Keeping a good balance is the key.
What I don't understand is how he died with all that corn to eat?
waaaaaahhh... my xbox was taken away... waaaaaahhhh.... suck it up like a man you sexually confused emo twit...

Anyone that blames the father for this tragedy is an idiot.
I think your being a bit cynical there

a) If the reward is to be effective then people have to know about it. I personally would never of heard about this boy's plight had it not been announced the inq.

As stated in the article more people volounteered to help as a result of the reward.

Microsoft helped bring this case to a wider audience.

b) I don't see anything written anywhere that makes me think that microsoft helped just to make them look good. I'm pretty sure there would be hacks shooting them down left, right and centre if this was the case.

c) If the boy's family are happy to accept the reward and state who put it up then why should anyone else be offended?
Headshot?
Well skipping school, steeling, lowered grades, running away... hum... sounds like he was mental or more likely addicted to drugs. The lack of a cause of death though is odd... Did he kill himself, get killed by someone else, or die of exposure or hunger. Sounds like there were a lot of signs and there seems to be a lot more than just a game involved.
@ coma.

He propably died from the lethal gases that corn in silo´s create? He propably went in there to sleep and never woke up?
What happened? What did he die of? Please follow through with the story.
"Game Over" that sub headline should be removed. This boy was found dead. Come on guys lets not mock what happened here. The inquirer sports catchy titles and subtitles that are funny when the situation warrants, but this sub title is a bit disrespectful.
... if I had to play a FPS like COD4 on a console. Then his parents took away that lowly existence and there was literally less than nothing left.
High_Fructose_Corn_Syrup

Drank it; exploded his tummy like an OompaLoompa!

That'll teach his daddy...
I agree Stewie. Once again Microsoft show that their moral compass works about as well as their software. A weak rip-off of other software that has a lot of bugs!
You have to blame the kid for this sutuation.
Sure he's 15 playing a game rated for 18+ and maybe that's why they have ratings. Disobey the ratings advice and look what happens. Dead children everywhere.
It appears that he fell out of a tree, his injuries, a blow to the chest, were similar to falling out of a tree.
I agree "game over" is pretty disrespectful here inq.. Anyways, here in Ontario the news is stating that he died of chest injuries sustained from a high fall. A tree they think.
group of call of duty players in need of new member, apply within

but in all sincerity my heart go's out to the family
Hmm, Canada in November. What are the chances he died by freezing... wake up people.
The autopsy revealed that he died from falling out of a tree. Maybe he fell asleep in a tree and fell out.
Whatever, it was a tragic affair. Of course there must be more to this than just the Xbox. But the parents aren't going to admit to anything that would put them in a bad light or their son in a bad way either for the press.
The police were apparently told that the boy was into watching outdoors shows. But if he was so into these, why was he not savvy enough to have survived? Maybe he had mental problems.
We will never know.

As for gaming, we all know it can become an addiction, and, like most addictions, you can't easily quit cold turkey. It can be dangerous. In this case it was.
Hi
I live here in Ontario, and one of the posters was wondering how Brandon died, as the info was lacking from the above article. The cause of death was determined to be hypothermia, and no foul play was suspected. It is a very sad case for everyone involved.
yeah theres alot of people in here that think this isnt a series matter and make landish comments about it. I live in ontario as well. The boy acctually died from jumping out of a tree he was hiding in. Its pretty sad when a kid runs away and does come back. Anyway after reading thesse.. please try to actually write somthing alittle more respectfull. Some people are idiots, and well, Theres a couple above me in this artilce.
It disturbs me to know that this website did not do its research on this story. First of all the title "Game Over" is in extremely bad taste. This family has suffered a huge loss and doesn't need to see crap like this. Second of all he was not found in a corn field he was in a heavily wooded area and died from falling from a tree. This is the confirmed cause of death. Please before you post stories like this make sure you check your facts. All of the news sites are reporting this information ie. thestar.com, torontosun.com.
