Phenom II listed

Down Under pricing upped, then downed
Wednesday, 26 November 2008, 18:02

AUSSIE ETAILER Austin Computers has listed the upcoming Deneb-based Phenom II 920 and 940 processors on its site, which for some reason is currently off-line.

According to the merchant, the unlocked 3GHz / 2MB+6MB cache Phenom II 940 will cost AUS$ 532 (approx. USD$ 347) while the 2.8GHz multiplier-locked Phenom II 920 will be a tad lower at AUS$471.90 (approx. USD$ 307). We’d subtract a few dollars for exchange purposes…

The (current) cheapest Core i7 on the market, the 920, costs $299.99 at NewEgg.com, which in our book is the same as AMD’s pricing.

The Intel Core i7 940 goes for $569.99 (also at NewEgg.com), while the AMD copycat will cost about $339.99 (guesstimation at work). Pundits and hacks alike have no real idea how the Deneb core will measure up to Nehalem in the end, but the pricing looks ambitious if you consider its predecessor’s pedigree…

Maybe the fuss that's being made about the overclocking ability has a part in this: most fanbois will skip the 920 and go straight to the overclocker-titillating 940… you won’t really be paying much for the privilege, now will you?

We’d point you towards the necessary URL, but it seems that the whole site has been down for a bit. However, some clever chap capped the whole affair and posted it on Imageshack, which you can find here. However, adding a bit of substance to the affair, Static Ice, a price engine Down Under did retrieve the listing for the upcoming January 8th processors. You can find the listing here.

Unfortunately, at the moment we were writing this, we didn’t have Austin’s contact nor could we access the site to query them about the listing. µ

spending

but in Phenom II case, we won't have to spend "extra" money on x58 board and triple channel DDR3 kit. tough money in this recession. I'll just have to ebay the toasty 6000+ and put a Deneb in, enjoy a decent overclock while cruising on 8GB of 1066 corsair. it's fast enough for most people

Too expensive

I was considering the Phenom II's but they've just clean priced me out from buying these. Considering pricing I think Intel CPU's are my best option right now. Ah well, my last 4 systems have been AMD, time for a change.

1 etailer price vs many! & cpu+mb combo price

yes it looks expensive but if you add the motherboard or NO motherboard price (will work in current AM2/AM2+) and take off 20%-30% the price (aka diffrent etailers pricewars) it will be alot cheaper than Core i7 920+X58

Copycat?

Copycat? You must mean Intel, right?

Not worth reporting.

Austin computers seem to be setting themselves up with a nice reputation for bait'n'switch here in Aus.
A rather large number of their components happen to be priced at 10-20% cheaper than the next best price, even though they're all the way over in W.A. (meaning they pay a lot of shipping just to get stock themselves.)
They happily accept your order, immediately place the item on "back order" and then eventually refund you when you start asking for an ETA.
The items then usually get delisted for a while, but then reappear with much higher values.
I don't see what the point of getting clickthroughs from Static Ice is when you don't have stock, don't intend to supply it at the advertised price and will not respond to ETA requests for orders made on the (bogus) price advertised. Bizarre. Perhaps they just haven't noticed that clicks != purchases yet.

Invalid Conclusion Drawn

Australian pricing NEVER equates to American pricing. I'm sure our Aussie friends will be along soon to elaborate. They pay far more for electronic goods than we do.

Updating

It seems odd that we still talk about cache (and RAM) in terms of byte, should we not now that we've had 16 to 64 bit computers for ages start to use the term MW, megaword (a word being 16bit) at least? or MLW mega long word even.

@ ihatefud

For the most part you are right. Thanks to shipping + low population + crappy exchange rate, prices are rarely cheaper than anything in the US.

I have seen a few things that are cheaper though, not much though

Too expensive

Yeah, we do pay far more than US pricing here. I just wish there were some US stores that would ship to Australia. Can't really be that hard can it?

Heck, I'll buy from overseas to get lower pricing. eBay isn't really an option though, anything on there has inflated prices when it comes to computer components.
