Freedom2surf email down for four days

Server went boom during upgrade
Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 10:26

ANNOYED USERS have been flooding the INQ's mailbox with complaints about Tiscali's Freedom2surf service which has seen some punters living without email for four days now.

INQ reader Stuart Littlejohn told us, "Currently email has been down since Friday with it supposedly 'fixed' last night at 7pm. By 7:10pm it was down again and is still down. There is no response to raised tickets (I have three outstanding tickets that I have never received a response to)."

He went on to tell us that, "Calls to technical support result in a 'we’re looking at it' response with nobody willing to explain why there are so many problems. They continually claim that it’s only a 'small number of customers' so I must be really really really unlucky, along with all the folks on the TiscaliUser web site who just happen to be affected by every outage."

We contacted Tiscali, who told us, "Freedom2surf has been working on the planned essential upgrade of its mail platform which would not have affected customers. However during this we experienced an unexpected failure on the legacy F2S platform which has resulted in some un-migrated customers temporarily losing access to their mail box.

"Our technical team have been working round the clock to resolve this and we now believe that this has been resolved, but we will be testing over the next 24 hours before we confirm everything is back to normal.

"We do apologise for the inconvenience and we will continue to provide updates on our service status page."

If you are a Tiscali customer and are still having problems with your email, please let us know in the comments below. µ

Wrong type of horde

Their web mail service was giving Horde errors (horde is a common web mail application, written principally in PHP). These error messages were spitting out the full, actual paths to various PHP include files, which points to very poor system configuration.

My guess is they've hired one of those geniuses that thinks he's a system administrator because he runs a Wamp server for his Warcraft guild's forum. Clearly, he can't handle this type of 'horde', either!
