AMD gets Phenom II to 6.3 GHz

Over clocking is us
Friday, 21 November 2008, 11:51

AMD SHOWED OFF its upcoming 45-nanometer 'Deneb' desktop chips for reviewers in Texas on Thursday, and overclocked it to what some observers said was 6.3GHz.

The Deneb chips, which are going to be the Phenom II's, were cooled by liquid nitrogen but other hacks said that it hit 4GHz with air cooling and 5GHz with dry ice cooling.

The top Phenom II chip, due out sometime in the first quarter of 2009, will reportedly list as 3.0GHz off the shelf. Intel's top Core i7 processor has been overclocked to 4.5 GHz on air cooling alone and some claim to have taken it to 5.7GHz using liquid nitrogen.

AMD said that the Phenom II demos were done on what the chip maker is calling its 'Dragon' platform which is a quad-core Phenom II processor. It also had an ATI Radeon 4800 series discrete graphics and an AMD 790 chipset. AMD said the extra level of "headroom" towards dramatic overclocking capacities on the Phenom II parts is due to a combination of architectural improvements over the original Phenoms first released late in 2007.

A spokesman said it was about high-speed path optimisations, memory pre-fetch, how it does branch predictions and the larger cache.

The result has been modest improvements on instruction per clock but much better clock frequency.

AMD is Now Cloud of Engineers & Nothing More. Perhaps this is more War Between Chartered & TSMC, than Brand Names. War of Minute Dimensions.32nm or less Vs. near 90 nm tech

About Time !

It's about time AMD finally got a serious contender out of the shop...it's been a long two years with only one choice at the top....

This is excellent

Now we should expect intel announcing an early release of the succesor for the Core i7, and why not, intel could name it Core i8.

But wait, knowing how names schemes are terribly strange these days on all techno areas, maybe intel comes with "Core i7 II"... who knows.

AMD, I love to see them working hard. deserves double the credits, due to the worlds financial mess. Triple the credits, for resisting tight competition from intel since core 2.

Spirit or Miracle? Mmm Maybe both?
And I bet the ATI 5000 will be the final axe for nvidia. They deserve it for leaving nforce 3 users on the dust. :P

Hmmm... needs to be faster....

Oh, goody, finally a processor ALMOST fast enough to run Microsoft's candidate for abortion rights OS.

I wonder how much faster it would run using Helium-4 superfluid for cooling. Probably have to run it at 10 GHz just to generate enough heat to keep it from shattering into teeny-tiny bits of silicon.

Still Pessimistic

We'll see. I'm not convinced it'll be better than core i7. But if it overclocks sweet and is inexpensive, maybe it'll take off with gamers. If the virtualization is all it's cracked up to be, maybe servers as well.

Keep the pipes long ?

Lets hope that pipeline lengths haven't been itterated to too many steps to get this kind of headroom. It could end up a Netburst shenanigan all over again.

Is about TIME - Back to FX time?

Ohh boy - Really hope that all of this is true! My main rig is a Core 2 quad (at the moment ;) - I always like AMD and Hey, my Lan party NF250GB - Mobile Athlon 4000+ still working nicely. Even my very old NF7-S with Mobile Athlon 2600+ never gave up on me! - Ohh we are going back to Athlon FX time! If what they are claiming is true... We just have to wait and see

Just a gentle reminder

To those of you who aren't old enough to remember (back when intel had no meaningful x86 competition) ...

It really, really sucked when we were being spoon fed overpriced processors. Not only that, had the Athlon brand not appeared, we'd all be using Itaniums now (because we had no choice). Chew on that for a while.

Competition is good.

Now I'm going to have to make my rig run @ 5ghz.....this gonna be fun.

And I'v been trying to tell all those Intel I7 bandwagon junkies to wait for Deneb.
Wait till they see the handicapped overclocking on the low end I7's

This story must have been painful for The Inquirer?

With the constant bashing by several hacks at The Inquirer, who probably profit from constantly bashing AMD and promoting Intel, it must have been painful to get a reality check and post this story.

No doubt a few pints will ease the pain but it won't change the bias often displayed here by some but not all hacks. Thankfully AMD exists or we'd all be using Pentium 90's that cost $1000 a pop.

65% faster at 6.3GHz

It is known that in raw FP power AMD is >50% faster at the same clock then Intel. This is why in supercomputers AMD (second after IBM) is ahead of Intel (third). I did not believe my eyes when I've made my own benchmarks on current 4-core processors. So SPEC results tell the truth. What's left is a little: make gamers similarly happy improving only 2-3 damn slow multimedia extensions

Naming convention

Are they still going to give their CPUs name like 3000+ which give a theoretical MHz comparison to Pentium 4s?

Intel is two generations on now what are they comparing it too?

Overclocking

It is one thing to get to Windows but its another thing to run a benchmark. Untill I see some SuperPi times you just doent know. Intel Core2Duo@ 6.3Ghz does 1M SPi in 6.875s a P4@7.3Ghz does 1M in 17s. AMD Phenom@ 4Ghz does 1M in 19.992s Intel Q6600@ 4Ghz does it in 12.891s.

5 ghz aint that new.....

IBM's POWER(tm) chips are running 4.7/5 Ghz for a long time now, on 65nm, aircooled.

2009 you will be seeing the next step of that.....
Ironical, if you consider Steve Jobs argument for switching to Intel from POWER.

Competition

We need some serious competition from AMD or we are going to be paying alot of money for a decent processor from Intel in the future.

Jobs PowerPC->Core2 move bad?

Granted its seems that apple would be better if it used PowerPC type cpus still, by switching to Core2 it allowed them to make much better performing notebooks while it worked out the next platform.

Apple has since bought P.A. Semi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P.A._Semi

and is most likely working on PowerPC derived processors for use in the next iPhone or Air, since both run OSX they just might be back on powerPC architecture before long.

It might just not be used in the desktops or Macbook Pro's.

It runs benchmarks at 5+ gigs.

Per Fudzilla.com:

"...AMD has demonstrated that Deneb, Phenom II CPU, when cooled with LN2 can run stable at over 5GHz+ and run stable Far Cry 2 benchmark. This is a great score as the guys who were overlocking have said that this was the first time they seriously played with Deneb overclocking..."

Obviously Deneb is the real deal.

Ahem. Apple never ran on POWER. Apple Macs
used to run on PowerPC. You want to use AIX and
have a lot of dough, then you can have POWER.

POWER != PowerPC. Ask Mr. Google.

overclock

@GroundZero: no, Intel has done NOTHING to limit overclocking on lower end i7's.

they can take their phenoms to a terahertz and they'll still be behind Intel.

Burn Out Processor & Then Sell it as NEW.

Tests are good, yet AMD isn't doing testing, online retailers are. When tests over, sell, Then defective equipment on auction site, for List Price. You Be Loser, It wasn't such good processor to believe in, in most cases, with crums off floor marketing, being result.

Buying German plant isn't posssible, shurely all amd plants are similar worldwide. You get equipment, yet NOT Operators, Try to move equipment & You cann't as its connected to their plant, you don't get building & so, Like all stock stuff, naivee loses out, complete Loss of Investment.
Double Talkers?. Foundry means Foundling & like all orphans, are in for Hard Luck World.

Inspite of theINQ NOT being intrested in Stock, Rightly, think of GM last week, bottomed on $1.98 from $90, in one decade.GM Dealers moving to Hyundai, Much Better Vechile, Torted by GM. So Good Luck.Burnt Processor, No Differnt than Vechile with NO Warrentee. Dowlinskis' Think US as Children, & that We are & Always Will Be.We Speak English, b a r f....

Hey-This Was Brand New Two Days Ago! Then Switched for Junk of same model.

Faster News is Great, Maybe 8 core will bring new TOP AMD, Yet....

POWER==PowerPC, however PreP != CHRP

read mr google about it. or better even, mr IBM.

which means that apple *could* run osX on power if they want. instruction set is compatible.

Linux runs on both from the same install disc.

I do not think apple will, though.

Why they bought PA semi is a mystery to most of us. I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with power.

PA semi offerings for power are to do with embedded devices, although you *could* build a laptop around it.

Re: superpi results from LeadSled

LeadSled you should know as well as i do that SuperPI is a worthless benchmark. sure intel always wins. because it only uses one core and it loads in the l2 cache of the intel cpu. AMD never won this mark but yet they blasted away the pentium 4 in to dust. you should consider something reasonable such as cinebench or pcmark which utelizes the latest processor instructions and capability's instead of keeping stuck to such old inferior benchmarks which are intel optimized, too short of run time and dont give a valid impression of capability and comprasion.

common AMD i'm waiting

nice overclock but i am still waiting for the mouthwatering on die PCI-E controller
dunno i would look ahead before doing this we have 2.0 now so what 3.0 with either backwards compatable to 2.0. make socket F or over pinned ie 1600 pin so no socket changes in the (near)future

or jump a logicial die shrink and bring 22nm chips main stream while chip-zilla is milking 32nm.
as we have learned amd has to do some radicial stuff for any creds so step up and shock chip-zilla

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=254&Itemid=63&limit=1&limitstart=4

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=884

As you can see the I7 has serious problems with stability near 4ghz, and from the hardOCP review we learn that it's due to heat.
Even watercooled it will be tough to push them much past 4ghz

Here is a Phenom 2(Deneb)
http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=730856 4.3 on air stable

http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10564&Itemid=1 Close to 4 on stock cooler.

C0 stepping(Engineering sample) http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=204198 3.975Ghz(4)

So all in all the Deneb's probably clock higher with less juice. how this relates to performance we won't know till we see them head to head.

It may not be anything that was done to the chips, but the lower ones seem to be binned quite low.

Although the Jew did come up with the CORE.

He couldn't better it any more and the texas rednecks had to do their thing and make it better with CORE2. They even gave that good jewish fellow a job in the U.S... that's o.k as he didn't look like he was into killing anything, but then who knows.

Sadly i'm still waiting for the 10GHz intel promissed back in the late 90s and now can't even go beyond 4GHz. All this billions into R&D and still nothing, what a waste. If only they approach some rabbi in some dark alley in some run-down back street in Haifa, Israel they'd probably get the Holy Grail to defeating the 4GHz wall.

AMD just need to give up smoking whatever they are on, and focus on doing something creative and maybe focus on speed as a simple boost in performance. In the past i did hate AMD, but now i'm looking to get one in the not too distance future, say March '09.

These morons are stuch and i don't see much in improvements, since CORE2 they're going nowhere. We'll see what the i7 does, problem is i never overclock so i hate these 3x ghz intel are having their chips come out as, is a load of bol**ks.

Also if you use linux you don't need anything more than 3GHz and vista is a load of to*s anyway, last i heard it was dead or in the process of being killed.

I like the underdogs, they must get support.

Jon.
