AMD IS TO BUILD a third fab in Dresden, according to reports all over the German press.

The chip maker will announce the project this coming Monday.

Along with a third fab, AMD will refurbish its existing facilities at its Dresden site. The figure of a billion Euros has been bandied about.

At the beginning of April the firm outlined plans for significant investment in its Dresden facilities. It seems that plans to modernise its existing fabs, numbers 30 and 36, have mutated into plans for a whole new building.

There is some speculation that the chipmaker wants to use 450mm wafers in the fab, leaping beyong its current 300mm technology. The chip-maker has refused to confirm this, although it may yet do so on Monday. µ
