THE co-editor of XML and the XML namespace specifications, Sun's Tim Bray has got all excited about the Relax NG standard.

For those who fail to keep track of XML languages, Relax NG is a schema language for XML and it specifies a pattern for the structure and content of an XML document. It is simple to use. Writing in his bog, Bray says that Relax NG is so good that it should be used instead of the W3C XML Schema.

He said that the language is a milestone in the life of XML and everyone has known this "for years." Bray said that W3C XML Schemas were crap. Not only are they hard to read, they are difficult to write, understand and have interoperability problems.

But Schemas based on Relax NG are a doddle, he said.

He enthuses about a revolution where W3C XML is chucked out as a failed experiment. "We need declare it a worthy but failed experiment, tear down the shaky towers with XSD in their foundation, and start using Relax for all significant XML work," Bray said.
