Beware the wi-fi evil twin

The jaws that gnash the teeth that bite

CRACKERS ARE setting up 'evil twin' wireless networks in Internet cafe's to snoop on diners, a security bod has warned.

Phil Cracknell, president of the UK branch of the Information Systems Security Association told Network World that such attacks were a doddle and were becoming popular among the cracking community.

All a cracker does is set up a rogue Wi-Fi connection on a laptop with a bit of simple programming and a special USB thumb drive that acts as an access point.

The access points are hard to trace and can be shut off, Cracknell said. When a victim logs in, their wi-fi looks for the nearest hot-spot and since the hacker is closest it links to his or hers because it has the strongest signal.

Cracknell told Network World that it was possible to harvest some good information in a short span of time using rogue hot spots.
