China cracks down on mobile spam
THE CHINESE Ministry of Information and Information Technology (MIIT) has ordered 18 cellphone service providers to suspend operations due to "irregular activities", a local news service reported Thursday.
MIIT said it had analysed reports of mobile spam messages made by users to a national mobile complaints center and investigated service providers implicated in transmitting fake promotions and fraudulent messages to subscribers.
It announced that regional communications administrations in nine provinces have imposed punishments of suspension on 18 mobile service providers that had "serious irregularities".
The names of the affected mobile companies weren't reported, but the provinces in which they had been operating include Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Hubei, Chongqing and Sichuan.
MIIT also said it will strengthen its monitoring of mobile service providers and will require them to observe regulations and serve subscribers honestly. It hopes users will continue to report "irregular activities" in order to support the integrity of China's telecommunications.
To prevent reoccurance of mobile operator problems, MIIT plans to pursue a programme of long-term service monitoring including periodic checks and penalties for repeat offenders. µ
