Tories back Blunkett's ID plans

Napoleon rulez, OK?
Tuesday, 14 December 2004, 12:28
THE CONSERVATIVE Party, or the Tories as they were referred to with scorn by the Americans when they were screwing about with the former colony, has said it officially supports plans by Home Minister Dave Blunkett to introduce ID cards here.

The Europeans, and never let us forget that we are a part of Europe, can't understand why quite a lot of British people are getting het up about ID cards.

There's a solid historical reason for it. When Napoleon attempted to unite Europe through bloody conquest, French laws were imposed on part of his empire. Let us not forget that he started off as a republican and then declared himself an emperor.

Napoleonic law still runs in many European countries, and is quite different from both Scottish and English law, never mind the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.

Mostly the laws in the British Isles are based on common law, which is quite different from Napoleonic law.

The Whigs, or as we call them these days the Liberal Democrats, are adamantly against the scheme. The "Labour" party is for'em.

Did you know that Hannover, home to the famous CeBIT, used to be a part of the British Empire when the German kings took over the mantle of the Crown?

King Henry VIII, a Tudor, is probably spinning in his grave. Never mind Elizabeth I. ยต
